Who are we looking for?

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is seeking a Associate Lecturer / Lecturer in Industrial Design to join School of Design, Faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice, Academic Division.

Associate Lecturer/ Lecturer in Industrial Design will contribute to / lead curriculum development for the new Industrial Design course and contribute to teaching and research in the study area and across the wider School of Design.

The successful applicant will have a strong research and teaching profile appropriate for level of appointment sought, with demonstrated experience in publishing traditional and/or practice-based research outputs. As a member of the Industrial Design team, the successful applicant will be required to align their research with the Design Lab and actively contribute to undergraduate teaching and Higher Degree Research supervision.
A successful applicant is also expected to have and maintain a reputation for excellence in research and industry engagement and have demonstrated commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research supervision.

As an Associate Lecturer/ Lecturer, the successful applicant will also provide leadership in service to the University and engagement with industry, the community, professional associations, alumni and other stakeholders.

The Faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice is led by the Executive Dean and the Faculty Executive team comprising the Executive Dean, Deputy Dean, Heads of School, Associate Dean Learning and Teaching, Associate Dean Research, and Faculty Operations Manager.

The faculty is comprised of the following Schools under the leadership of the respective Head of School:

– School of Communication
– School of Creative Practice
– School of Design
– School of Early Childhood and Inclusive Education
– School of Teacher Education and Leadership
– School of Justice

In addition, specialist Faculty professional functions include:

– Faculty Operations: Budget and Planning, School Administration Support, Space, Equipment and Assets, and Technical Services teams under the leadership of the Faculty Operations Manager
– Office of the Deputy Dean: Engagement, and Student Specialist Support under the leadership of the Deputy Dean
– Office of the Executive Dean under the leadership of the Executive Dean

About the School of Design

Design improves the quality of work and life, brings social and economic advantages to industry and community, and is central to the development of fulfilling citizenship and social innovation. Our students and researchers are part of a sustainability-focused, multidisciplinary school with close connections to the design profession.

Our courses explore new digital technologies within well-equipped workshops and studios that offer a unique hands-on university experience.

Our study areas include:

– industrial design
– interaction design
– visual communication
In 2019 a new curriculum commenced in the School that has seen the new Visual Communication course launched alongside the introduction of a number of cross faculty double degrees.

The new courses provide students with enhanced studio experiences through the introduction of a series of cross disciplinary Impact Labs at all year levels. Students participate in problem-based, collaborative approaches to learning aligned to real world experiences and contexts. Individuals wishing to further their skills and knowledge through postgraduate study can undertake practice-led or traditional research programs that are internationally renowned for their innovative, creative, and commercial contributions to Creative Industries and broader industry fields.

The School has established international connections including teaching and research partnerships with leading institutions and organisations including China, New Guinea, Denmark Indonesia, South Africa, South America, United Kingdom, and the United States.

 QUT Design Lab

The Design lab hosts a diverse team of academics, research students, and industry professionals and supports transdisciplinary collaborations that result in tangible impact and engagement, and which transfer knowledge and technology into beneficial applications for industry, society, and the environment.

With a mission of “Change by Design”, the QUT Design Lab demonstrates the benefit and value of design methods, practices, and outcomes in realising Australia’s National Innovation agenda.

What you need to succeed

You will thrive in this role as an experienced and dynamic academic with a passion for innovative research and teaching, which prepares students for the real-world.

You will demonstrate:

1. Completion of a doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline area or equivalent professional experience and recognition.
2. Demonstrated disciplinary expertise/track record and leadership in teaching, including innovative curriculum design and delivery at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
3. Demonstrated research leadership in Industrial Design, evidenced through national recognition and impactful research activity and outputs.
4. Expertise in technical aspects of industrial design to fulfil our commitments to teaching in advanced manufacturing, CAD and transportation design.
5. Research background in a technical field which can align to our focus areas in Advanced Manufacturing, Biofabrication, Medical Technologies and Design Robotics.

Remuneration: $83,894 to $113,836 pa (LEVA) (inclusive of $70,891 to $96,193 pa salary, 17% superannuation and 17.5% recreation leave loading) OR $119,829 to $142,312 pa (LEVB) (inclusive of $101,257 to $120,255 pa salary, 17% superannuation and 17.5% recreation leave loading)
