About This Opportunity 

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Associate Lecturer to join the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry, in the discipline of Classics and Ancient History. In this role, you will undertake teaching at undergraduate level (including course coordination), with a focus on developing expertise in teaching, and in areas of service and engagement with an increasing degree of autonomy.

Key responsibilities will include: 

Teaching and Learning

  • Assist in the development of new programs and course material in the area of focus, by consulting with program advisors and stakeholders, ensuring courses are engaging, relevant and contemporary.

  • Teach across different settings and collaborate on educational practice and innovative curriculum design including online learning and alternative teaching methods.

  • Undertake teaching, including collaboration on course coordination, lecturing, tutoring, consultation and the preparation of teaching and assessment materials and marking for undergraduate levels.

  • Maintain and improve the quality of courses as measured through evaluation instruments to meet industry and educational standards.

  • Undertake a range of activities which contribute to maintaining currency within the discipline.

  • Provide high quality service to students, including academic counselling and advice

  • Understand and apply University Rules relevant to teaching and learning practice.

  • Teach and Coordinate undergraduate subjects in the classical languages and ancient history majors, initiate and develop course material.

Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).

  • Demonstrates personal effectiveness in supervision and the management of researcher development.

Citizenship and Service

  • Shows leadership of self through collaboration and active participation in priority activities for the unit.

  • Begin to develop external links by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

  • Contribute to internal service roles and processes, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.

  • Provide support to other academic positions as needed and during absences.

  • Perform a range of administrative functions as required.

  • Any other duties as reasonably directed by your supervisor.

About You  

  • PhD in the field of Greek history.

  • Ability to contribute to the Greek language teaching program.

  • Ability to teach different periods of Greek history.

  • Demonstrated teaching skills at undergraduate levels and a desire to innovate in this area.

  • Preparedness to use alternative modes of teaching, digital technologies, flexible learning options.

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.

  • Willingness to share discipline and School administrative tasks.

  • Willingness to represent the School and the University through external service and engagement, including liaison with the community.

  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills.

Desirable

  • Ability to teach Latin language

  • Ability to teach Roman history and/or Greek art and archaeology

  • Track record of engagement with the broader community.

What We Can Offer 

This is a full-time, fixed term position through until 31 December 2024 at Academic Level A.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $72,144 – $96,530 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $84,408 – $112,940 per annum. 

The following flexible employment options may be available for this role: some working from home (on agreement with the HOS); variable start or finish times.
