The Disability Rights Division defends and promotes the rights of people with disabilities and older people and works to mainstream disability rights and older people’s rights within the broader human rights agenda. Priorities include independent living, inclusive crisis response, inclusive digital world and older person’s rights.

The Division conducts a wide range of work, including investigations, report writing, advocacy, campaign and media outreach, coordination with partners, in close collaboration with regional and thematic divisions, Advocacy, Multimedia, Communications, and other parts of the organization.

We are seeking candidates for the position of Associate to provide administrative support to the team. This is a full-time position that will be based in one of our offices in Europe, Africa or the Middle East and North Africa and reports to the Deputy Director of the Disability Rights Division.

The successful candidate may have the option to work remotely but will be expected to work from the office 2-3 times a week. We aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities:

1. Provide day-to-day administrative support to the Disability Rights Division, such as tracking project timelines and deadlines, scheduling meetings, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, creating and maintaining extensive filing and archiving systems, organizing complex travel and logistics for international team meetings, managing divisional expenses, and responding to requests for information;

2. Be responsible for complex logistics for special events and meetings in different locations with visitors, NGOs, and government officials;

3. Proofread, edit, format, coordinate, and distribute materials such as translations, news releases, reports, multimedia materials, social media kits, briefing papers, op‑eds, publications and web content;

4. Conduct news monitoring developments in the disability rights and older persons’ rights fields;

5. Assist with advocacy work, including scheduling official meetings, maintaining relationships and communication with partners, and building and maintaining contact databases;

6. Assist with desk research as needed;

7. Act as a liaison and maintain communications with HRW offices, global staff, and external partners;

8. Draft documents and correspondence and respond to requests for information in English;

9. Recruit, coordinate, and mentor interns; and

10. Perform other tasks as may be required.

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in human rights, international relations, social science, law or a related field is required.

Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant administrative work experience is required. Experience and familiarity with disability rights, older people’s rights and human rights is highly desirable. Persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Related skills:

1. Prior office/administration experience and effective organizational skills are required.

2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required.

3. Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well under pressure with tight deadlines while juggling multiple tasks are essential.

4. Ability to take initiative, prioritize with minimal supervision, and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally is required.

5. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.

6. Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications and social media is required.

7. Demonstrated interest in international human rights and commitment to disability rights and older people’s rights and inclusion is highly desirable.

8. Written and oral proficiency in a second language is desirable.

Other: Candidates must possess valid work authorization for the country in which they will be working from; HRW is unable to sponsor work visas for this role.
