GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Associate Director of Student Activities and Student Organizations serves as an essential member of the Student Life team and has direct reporting responsibility to the Senior Director of Student Activities and Student Organizations.  The mission of the Department of Student Activities and Student Organizations is to provide students with purposeful and inclusive programs, resources, and experiences that enhance the UM community through learning, engagement, and upholding campus traditions.  The department serves as an integral part of the Division of Student Affairs and Student Life and works closely with the William R. Butler Center for Volunteer Service and Leadership Development, Department of Orientation and Commuter Student Involvement, Multicultural Student Affairs, the LGBTQ Student Center, the Rathskeller, and the Student Center Complex.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the advisement and management of Hurricane Productions, UM’s student-run programming board. The Associate Director is responsible for oversight of the planning, implementation, risk assessment, contracting, and program assessment of 200 programs per year. Hurricane Productions includes Canes Night Live, Cinematic Arts Commission, Concerts, Patio Jams, Canestage Theatre Company, the Rathskeller Advisory Board, and Daytime & Special Events.
  • Oversees Hurricane Productions in the development and implementation of comprehensive marketing plans for campus events, working closely with professional and student staff in Student Affairs Marketing and Communications.
  • Designs, plans, and implements leadership training initiatives for students involved in Hurricane Productions, including an annual spring leadership/new officer retreat.
  • Provides administrative oversight to Category 5 – Athletic Programming Board, Senior Send Off Activities, and Student Fan Zone.
  • Designs, plans, and implements assessment measures to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and services.
  • Negotiates, reviews, edits and executes all complex contracts for events and programs within Hurricane Productions and all Student Affairs departments, working closely with Financial Operations, Risk Management, and the Office of General Counsel.
  • Serves as a resource to student organization leaders and University administrators regarding small and large program and event planning on campus. Provides specific guidance on issues related to University policies and procedures, contract negotiation and management, and risk assessment.
  • Represents the Department of Student Activities and Student Organizations on various division and university-wide committees.
  • Assists with department and division-wide programs such as Canefest, Commencement, Student Fan Zone, Homecoming, and other special events.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises an Assistant Director and a graduate assistant.
  • Assists with student employee development and provides daily supervision and feedback to student employees.
  • Works closely with professional staff in Student Affairs Communications & Marketing to supervise graphic designers responsible for developing content for various student programs.

Financial Responsibility

  • Financial management and oversight of budgets in excess of $1,000,000.00 including operational forecasts, accountability for monitoring, and ensuring compliance with policies.
  • Engages in sponsor/donor cultivation to support organizational and departmental programs and services under the advisement of the Senior Director.

Decision Making/Strategy

  • Contributes ideas and viewpoints to the Senior Director on operational and strategic plans for the department and campus programs/events.
  • Makes daily independent decisions to ensure department objectives are met and that University policies and procedures are followed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent English skills, verbal and written, required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, required.
  • Demonstrated project management, time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage details of multiple projects within firm schedules.
  • Ability to operate professionally and autonomously.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field.
  • Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration or related field preferred.

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Two to five years’ work-related experience in higher education/student affairs or related field.
  • Candidate will be expected to work nights and weekends.
