Position Title ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR/LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE
Position Summary The Associate Director/Leadership Institute is responsible for the direction and execution of a comprehensive student leadership development program. The Associate Director will work directly under the supervision of the Director/Leadership Institute to administer the Leader Advancement Scholarship Protocol, including recruiting applicants, chairing the selection committee, offering Protocol experiences, coordinating with academic department chairs to offer “L” designated coursework, and planning experiential learning and service learning opportunities. The Associate Director also provides leadership in assessing student learning.
Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in student personnel services, higher education, leadership, or related field.
Three years of professional experience, preferably in student leadership programming.
Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
Demonstrated organizational skills, including ability to plan, establish priorities and handle multiple tasks and projects.
Team player who is highly motivated, a self-starter, and a dedicated professional.
Experience with student leadership programs.
Ability to work with diverse populations and departments.
Ability to analyze, synthesize and evaluate information.
Ability to formulate, implement, assess and amend goals, objectives, and strategic plans.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Valid driver’s license.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree.
Direct experience in a student leadership program.
Experience in a higher education environment.
Experience with a co-curricular experience designed to support graduate training in the field of student affairs/higher education.
Experience working with documenting student learning through electronic portfolios.
Experience working with transfer students and non-traditional student populations.
Demonstrated experience planning, organizing, and implementing campus visitation events.
Duties & Responsibilities Represents the Leadership Institute Director in his/her absence.
Collaborates with academic deans and department chairs to offer “L” designated sections of HST 110, PSY 100, LDR 200, PSC 105, COM 267, COM 461, SOC 221, and HDF 110 in accordance with the Leader Advancement Scholar Protocol.
Serves as the instructor of record for LDR 100: Introduction to Leadership Education and Development, responsible for organizing the course, evaluating papers and projects, and issuing grades.
Provides leadership for the electronic portfolios through which Leader Advancement Scholars will document their satisfying Protocol requirements; train and supervise graduate assistants to appropriately evaluate student work.
Supervises graduate assistants who will provide academic advising to members of the Leader Advancement Scholar cohorts.
Plans major events associated with the Leader Advancement Scholar program, including annual mentoring retreats, interview and competition day, and graduation banquets.
Chairs the Leader Advancement Scholarship selection committee, recruit and train faculty to review applicants, supervise the process of identifying award winners from a national pool of more than 2,000 applicants.
Supervises the network of LEAD Teams that produces the Leadership Institute quarterly newsletter, organizes social events for the LAS cohorts, plans and conducts service learning excursions.
Develops and implements a “Phase II” admissions process for the Leader Advancement Scholar cohort through which existing CMU students may participate in, and graduate from, the Leader Advancement Scholar Protocol.
Supervises the Assistant Director/Leadership Institute and corresponding graduate assistant (GA) staff.
In cooperation with the Admissions office, coordinates and provides leadership in marketing the LAS program nationally.
Coordinates with the Office of Scholarships and Financial aid disbursement of scholarship funds, communicates with scholarship recipients their award status, hears appeals of students who have failed to renew their award.
Informs budgeting process, responsibly manages all funds allocated to the Leader Advancement Scholarship.
Assists in the annual evaluation of the Central Michigan University leadership assessment plan.
Explores opportunities to fund student leadership programs through external grants.
Provides leadership and vision for the Division of Enrollment Student Services (ESS) graduate assistant (GA) learning community to foster a meaningful support network for aspiring professionals.
Fosters working relationships with ESS Department Directors, graduate assistant supervisors, and Educational Leadership Department (EDL) faculty.
Designs and organizes a three-week division-wide aligned orientation and on-boarding process for new and returning graduate assistants.
Partners with other ESS units and the EDL faculty to strategically develop learning contracts for graduate assistants.
Works directly with the Office of Residence Life to coordinate on- campus housing policies and logistics for the graduate assistant learning community.
Manages the development of ESS GA Learning Community guidebook and resources.
Assists University Communications in developing promotional items and electronic communication to prospective students, current students, and alumni of the GA Learning Community.
Directs operations of the Leader Advancement Scholar Constituent Alumni Chapter.
Serves as the liaison to the College of Graduate Studies, College of Education and Human Services, and the Department of Educational leadership to recruit candidates for assistantships and assists with the planning of on-campus interviews and visit days.
Active on a national level in the field of student leadership development; reads professional journals/articles, and incorporates new learning in practice, attends and presents at relevant meetings and conventions of higher education and leadership organizations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
