Position Summary:

Reporting to Senior Director, Student Life and Learning (SD-SLL), the Associate Director Human Resources (HR) works closely with the SD-SLL, the Deputy Provost, and the senior executive team to develop and implement Student Life and Learning’s annual and long-term plans and priorities, to promote organizational effectiveness, to support culture change initiatives, and to ensure effective human resource management across Student Life and Learning (SLL).

The Associate Director HR is responsible for providing leadership and direction in the delivery of comprehensive Human Resource practices across Student Life and Learning and oversees the overall Human Resources portfolio in SLL, which includes Student Services, Athletics and Recreation, Student Housing and Hospitality Services, Dean of Students, the Office of Student Life and Learning, and Enrolment Services. The Associate Director HR manages special projects and advises the SD-SLL, the Deputy Provost, and the senior Executive Team on issues related to, but not limited to, recruitment and retention, performance, compensation, staff development, community engagement, and recommends courses of action. The Associate Director also guides and supports the Human Resources Advisors in the Units.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct analyses to foster and support data-driven decisions across the Student Life and Learning portfolio; share conclusions and make recommendations on appropriate solutions.
  • Recommend strategies and initiatives that will enhance overall human resources performance, ensure constrained resources are allocated to the highest priorities, ensure alignment among the units reporting into Student Life and Learning, and contribute to overall success across Student Life and Learning.
  • Makes recommendations for community engagement and community building across the various units of Student Life and Learning.
  • Oversee and implement organizational reviews within Student Life and Learning. Support change management initiatives.
  • Work with senior administration to Develop Key Performance Indicators (KPI) that support Human Resources effectiveness and establish the strategic direction of effective, efficient HR services within Student Life and Learning.
  • Provide guidance and advice the SD-SLL,  Deputy Provost, the SLL Executive Team and the HR professionals in the various units reporting into Student Life and Learning, in the areas of recruitment, performance dialogue, succession planning.
  • Work in a highly unionized environment comprised of many collective agreements and may represent Student Life and Learning in contract negotiations. 
  • Work with the Organizational Development unit and external providers to manage and deliver training solutions across Student Life and Learning. 
  • Work with Labour and Employee Relations on grievances, arbitrations, and disciplinary cases as needed across Student Life and Learning.
  • Lead the Annual Compensation Review (ACR) for Student Life and Learning.
  • Chair the Student Life and Learning HR Network meetings.
  • Represent the Office of Student Life and Learning in disputes or performance issues and take appropriate measures.
  • Facilitate or oversee the provision of mediation support for managers overseeing SLL staff.
  • Oversee HR functions for the Office.
  • Directly supervise administrative and support staff.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

  • CRHA/CHRP designation is a definite asset.
  • Successfully designed and implemented new HR programs, processes and practices to raise employee engagement and help Student Life and Learning in the completion of its mission and overarching objectives.
  • Strategic thinker and proven change agent with a demonstrated ability to influence and gain buy-in from all stakeholders.
  • Experience working in a highly unionized and complex organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, coach, motivate and evaluate staff.
  • Proven ability to communicate clearly, appropriately, and effectively on sensitive and occasionally competing issues.
  • Computer literate. Experience with HRMS, preferably with Workday.
  • Experience with self-funded units within a university context preferred. 
  • Fluently bilingual in both written and spoken English and French considered an asset.

Bachelor’s Degree 5 Years Related Experience /

Annual Salary:

(MPEX Grade 07) $82,150.00 – $102,690.00 – $123,230.00
