The Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation The Mansueto Institute is a new hub for urban scholarship and practice, training the next generation of urban scholars. Our scholars develop fundamental knowledge that drives and sustains cities, with the goal of creating a coherent field of urban science and practice grounded in excellence and innovation. Our work spans various scales, disciplines and geographies, analyzing the challenges and opportunities of urbanization internationally and at home in Chicago with the aim of creating new perspectives and solutions.

Job Summary
 

The Mansueto Institute is seeking an Associate Director for Programs and Education to support its diverse programs and coordinate its educational efforts. The Associate Director is at the heart of the Institute, driving and managing our fellowship programs and working closely with Institute’s leadership to develop new strategic partnerships, within and outside of the University of Chicago. This position works closely with graduate and undergraduate students, taking primary responsibility for maintaining an atmosphere of innovation and creativity and acting as the primary point of contact. Institute’s programs include the Kreisman Initiative for Housing Policy, the graduate Certificate in Urban Science and Sustainable Development, the Urban Research Corps, the Urban Doctoral Fellows and other programs.
The Associate Director also shares substantial responsibility for the operations of the Institute, working closely with its Executive Director and Faculty Director regarding content, operations, and strategy. These functions include program planning, scheduling, program evaluation, personnel administration, budgets, marketing, and proposal development. Given the range of urban work at the University of Chicago, the Associate Director will also be responsible for ensuring that the Mansueto Institute functions as a collaborative intellectual hub for UChicago’s urban research and practice, requiring the mainatenance of a diverse set of relationships with staff, faculty and students.

Responsibilities

  • Helps develop, supervise and run programs and partnerships within and outside the University, including undergraduate and graduate programs at the Institute, graduate certificate in Urban Science and Sustainable Development, and the Urban Research Corps and Institute Postdoctoral Fellows Program.
  • Creates written reports, memos, and proposals as needed, in collaboration with other team members.
  • Works with communications staff to share program opportunities and outcomes.
  • Assists in budgeting and monitoring expenses for programs and initiatives.
  • Creates and maintains program functions and events, in collaboration with events staff.
  • Represents the Institute internally at UChicago, and externally, when needed.
  • Works closely with the Faculty Director in terms of content and strategy, especially for educational and training programs.
  • Works with the Executive Director to coordinate and supervise the Institute’s daily operations.
  • Uses in-depth knowledge and experience to administer the delivery of services to program participants and/or beneficiaries such as communicating with programs sponsors and academic advising for graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Trains office staff on office procedures and compliance protocols. Coordinates special projects.
  • Assists in the monitoring of the various financial and budgetary activities, including vendors contracts. Preparing and monitoring the budget for a unit.
  • Sets and communicates program priorities and performance standards and assesses operations using these criteria. Plans and conducts quality assurance reviews and recommends changes as appropriate.
  • Has moderate/high levels of interactions with faculty, researchers and staff for committee work or information.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.


Certifications:

Preferred Qualifications
 

Education:

  • Advanced (Masters or PhD) degree.
  • Education / Training in urban and/or innovation fields.

Experience:

  • Experience managing educational programs in a diverse, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet goals and deadlines, work collaboratively with a diverse set of people.
  • including students, faculty, colleagues, University staff and other constituents.
  • Experience managing people and budgets.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint/Keynote as well as social media and web tools.
  • Create distinctive presentations.

Preferred Competencies

  • A passion for innovation and learning in diverse, complex environments.
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills for the effective delivery of Mansueto’s priorities.
  • Act as a liaison between the Mansueto Institute and various external agencies, organizations, and institutions with whom they collaborate.
  • Work effectively across the University, including with faculty and staff across the divisions, schools, and units.
  • Demonstrates the skill and willingness to take initiative and proactively anticipate organizational needs.
  • Exceptional time and project management and organizational skills including the ability to meet external and internal deadlines.
  • Work on multiple projects simultaneously.
