Job Description:

Reporting to the Senior Director of Academic Technology Facilities, the Associate Director for Classroom Technology Support  is responsible for the planning, management, and oversight of all classroom technology and classroom technology support operations, as well as conference rooms and conference technology (Zoom), event technology, and digital signage systems on the Berklee and Boston Conservatory at Berklee Boston campus. The Associate Director provides leadership for the department, including resource and technology support planning and allocation, evaluating and improving processes, budget forecast and development, and infrastructure and technology planning and development. The ADCTS also provides leadership for the department staff, directly supervising five FT staff and up to thirty student employees. The Associate Director works with the Senior Director, Chief Engineer, and outside contractors on technical maintenance duties, installation planning, and setting technology standards. The ~115 classrooms and ~24 conference rooms are in operation seven days per week and serve the entire Berklee Boston campus operating in excess of 17 hours per day.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Recruits, hires, supervises, and leads 5 FT staff and about 25-30 Student Employees.
  • Responsible for the functional integrity (technical and physical), organization and general appearance of general classrooms, conference rooms, and digital signage systems.
  • Oversees the design, installation, maintenance, and programming of classroom audiovisual systems, including lecture capture, hybrid, and remote technologies. Coordinates with the Senior Director the design, planning, budgeting and implementation of physical and technical upgrades.
  • Advise on strategy and provide leadership and vision pertaining to audiovisual technology standards at Berklee and the Boston Conservatory at Berklee through conceptual design and innovation of technology-enhanced learning environments.
  • Prototypes and tests emerging teaching and audiovisual technologies.
  • Manages communications between Classroom Technology Support staff, Academic Scheduling, and Computer Support to ensure an effective and immediate flow of information as it pertains to Classroom Technology Support.
  • Serves as liaison between Physical Plant, Networking and Telecom, and Facilities Planning on all issues pertaining to classroom technology facilities.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Distributed Systems and the Chief Engineer of Academic Technical Maintenance to develop and test computer images and other technology configurations.
  • Collaborates with Department Chairs to support curricular needs and projects. Partners with departments across the institution to advise on and provide classroom audiovisual solutions that meet the needs and standards of the college.
  • Designs, creates, and modifies fair and effective policies and protocols to ensure the smooth operation of the department. Enforces regulations and policies pertaining to the proper use of facilities. Assists the Senior Director with producing and implementing policies and regulations at the divisional level.   
  • Plans and manages operational and capital budgets for classroom technology projects including facility improvement projects from inception to round up of final budget process.
  • Manages budgets for staff and student employees.
  • Advises on technical resources for special events requested by external departments college wide.
  • Ensures Classroom Technology Support Staff is up to date with current technology and implementations and support and troubleshooting protocols. Ensures the department provides exemplary technical support for all designated facilities.
  • Collaborates with the Technology Training department team to implement appropriate training for faculty and staff on classroom technology.
  • Directs the department’s communication strategy (newsletter, social media, internal communications) to keep stakeholders up to date on current technology and upgrades, facility, policy, and training information.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 5 years related professional experience.
  • BA degree in technology field or commensurate professional experience.
  • Strong leadership, planning, organizational, and project management skills

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Must possess a thorough understanding of classroom technology equipment and higher education classroom and classroom technology support needs.
  • Strong project management skills – ability to manage multiple tasks on a daily basis while simultaneously planning, coordinating and following through on many long-term projects.
  • Expertise in managing, scheduling, and leading a staff of technical employees.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills – ability to communicate effectively and interact with various personalities and work styles. Must be creative, detail-oriented, responsive to direction, and receptive to feedback.
  • Commitment to exemplary customer service; strong customer service skills including rapid response time, appropriate and timely escalation and incident resolution, and appropriate follow-up skills.
  • Strong technical and analytical skills; ability to interpret technical drawings and best practices in relation to classrooms and teaching spaces, to explain complex systems to users at all levels, and to translate technical instructions into easily understood steps to support a diverse client base.
  • Expertise and demonstrated troubleshooting ability in various technical areas:Integrated AV Systems – QSC, Extron, Crestron, and related technologies / networks
    • Apple macOS and iOS including device configuration
    • Integrated AV Systems – QSC, Extron, Crestron, and related technologies / networks
    • Network architecture – including segmentation, TCP/IP Protocol, Dante
    • Digital signage systems – Zoom Rooms and related hardware
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the specialized music production software and hardware:
    • Music software: ProTools, Finale, NI Komplete, Waves, Logic (list will change as needed).
    • Digital and analog audio hardware, MIDI, synthesizers, sound libraries, and plugins.
    • Signal flow and basic audio engineering concepts
    • Understanding of music, musical terms, and notation.
  • Ability to learn existing and emerging computer technologies quickly.
  • Certifications: CTS

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Direct reports: 5 FT Multimedia Support Consultants and 25-30 Student Employees

This position may provide an opportunity for limited remote work.
