Job Description:

In alignment with Berklee’s Vision & Strategy 2025, the Berklee Library’s mission is to support our students in achieving their artistic potential and equip them with the information and digital literacy skills needed to forge successful careers in today’s knowledge-driven, global society. As we move forward with this mission, the Library has embarked on a broad-reaching program to redesign our services and reassess our resources. 

To help push forward with a profound re-imagining of Berklee’s libraries, we are seeking an innovative, engaged, service-oriented individual to join our team as Associate Dean, Library.

Reporting to the Dean, Library & Learning Resources, this senior position is responsible for overall leadership, administration, and coordination of the department’s public-facing services and spaces. The Associate Dean will move forward with the significant advancements to merge and align the collections and operations for the Albert Alphin Library (Boston Conservatory) and the Stan Getz Library (Berklee College). The position would also lead the institution’s overall collection strategy, including the ever-growing electronic resources database and subscriptions to ensure that the Library’s collections continue to be relevant to the curriculum and support learning objectives.

Primary Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible for ensuring that library services, resources, and spaces are designed and supported in ways that maximally promote Berklee’s strategic vision of teaching excellence and commitment to student success.
  • Manages nine staff members (five direct reports), providing support for acquisitions, metadata creation, electronic resource management, ILL, library user services, and facility operations at Alphin and Getz Libraries. Sets goals and establishes work priorities.
  • Models a high level of professional engagement and customer service ethos. Coaching staff and student employees to ensure ongoing professional development and growth.
  • As a senior member of the department’s leadership team will work collaboratively and collegially to ensure a high degree of integration of services and functions across all areas. Leads the ongoing process of evaluating current resources and services, developing new services, and advancing department-wide strategic planning.
  • Serves in a leadership capacity to craft and promote an ongoing strategy for the development and management of the Berklee libraries’ digital and physical collections.

Required Education & Experience 

  • MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution preferred or equivalent in experience through a significant track record working in an academic environment or a performance-based career.
  • Significant post-secondary education in music and/or the performing arts.
  • Minimum of ten years of relevant professional experience developing and maintaining a music and/or the performing arts library collection and providing management oversight for highly diverse teams.
  • Minimum of seven years of a strong supervisory track record in an academic library with a  commitment to foster a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion with respect for people of diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Solid understanding of integrated library systems and their interaction with relevant workflow management systems such as electronic resource management systems, knowledge bases, and discovery systems.
  • Strong level of awareness of the current challenges and opportunities facing institutions of higher education, particularly in the performing arts sector.
  • This position may provide an opportunity for limited remote work.
