Associate Dean for Research, Scholarship, and Graduate Education

The College of Liberal Arts is seeking an Associate Dean for Research, Scholarship and Graduate Education. Qualifications include the tenured rank of Associate or Full Professor, an active record of research activities and experience working with grants and contracts, as well as the various matters associated with the education of graduate students, to include a familiarity with graduate student funding, curriculum matters and admissions and graduation protocol. Applications are invited from qualified faculty in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Mississippi.

The Associate Dean for Research, Scholarship and Graduate Education actively promotes the pursuit of knowledge through the research, scholarship and creative activities of the faculty of graduate education of the College of Liberal Arts and the betterment of graduate student education at the University of Mississippi. The College of Liberal Arts is represented by diverse disciplines, ranging across the arts, humanities, sciences and social sciences. Thus, it is incumbent on the Associate Dean for Research, Scholarship and Graduate Education to recognize and be actively engaged in fostering the diversity of scholarship opportunities among the different departments and appreciating the interactions among departments relative to the overall funding structure of the College.

In overseeing the operation of the College’s research activities, the Associate Dean meets with and advises faculty on research matters, directs internal funding competitions, negotiates with external agencies, coordinates the allocation of funds for cost sharing and other special projects, is involved in the negotiation of start-up packages, and promotes and facilitates interdepartmental and interdisciplinary research within the College and the University. In this role, the Associate Dean for Research, Scholarship and Graduate Education also works with department chairs and graduate program coordinators assisting with matters of funding admission, retention and graduation. The Associate Dean advises the Dean on fiscal policy, strategic planning and the College research budget, as well as support for graduate education in the College.

This 12-month appointment requires a substantial administrative commitment. The exact distribution of effort between teaching, service and research/creative activities will be negotiated with the Dean, but with an expectation the incumbent will continue to contribute in the areas of research/creative activities and teaching in their home department.
