Job Summary:

This position will provide expertise in project planning, designing, and modifying the exterior physical space across the UW-Madison institution for the Department of Campus Planning and Landscape Architecture (CPLA) within Facilities Planning & Delivery, in the Division of Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Campus Planning and Landscape Architecture.

Campus Planning & Landscape Architecture leads the development and implementation of the Campus Master Plan, School/College/Division unit Facilities Master Plans and the advance planning initiatives that result from those high level, guiding facilities planning documents. We guide campus development in a way that gives physical form to the university’s mission, vision, and programs though the effective use of human, environmental, and financial resources. The Associate Campus Planner will assist in a broad array of projects focused around both planning and landscape development. Planning specific support will require assistance with unit master plans, capital project support with local entitlements and zoning requirements, proposed facilities massing/blocking diagrams, and development of efficient physical planning strategies and best practices. Landscape design specific support will require the coordination and development of site based landscape strategies, supporting activities of the senior landscape architect and CPLA initiatives, and working with AutoCAD/GIS to identify, track, and manage the exterior physical assets of campus. Duties and responsibilities will include coordinated team efforts with staff in the offices of Space Management and Real Estate Services and the Department of Facilities Planning and Delivery.
The position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently while maintaining a commitment to strong team dynamics in all aspects of the work. The position will initially be an in-office work modality for the first 6 months and then be re-evaluated for any changes around hybrid/remote work schedule. Ultimately, the position offers flexibility and growth potential within an institutional setting. As the largest unit on campus, FP&M is committed to the stewardship of resources while it builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment at the UW-Madison campus in support of the university’s education, research, and outreach activities.

Responsibilities: Manages administrative and operational functions of facility planning initiatives or projects to provide informed solutions promoting the effective utilization of resources and provide facility planning solutions.
  • 10% Manages and directs operational functions and planning of one or multiple facilities or projects to foster innovative solutions
  • 15% Serves as the unit liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups providing organizational information to ensure timely and safe transitioning of major construction or remodeling projects
  • 20% Assists with developing operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, best practices, and unit objectives
  • 20% Assists with the development, execution, and utilization of strategic planning analysis to determine long term needs and develop sustainable solutions
  • 15% Reviews, evaluates, approves, and provides recommendations for facility improvements, space assignments, and proposals utilizing best practices and established policies and procedures
  • 5% Be creative as an advocate for responsible stewardship of the land through resilient and sustainable design practices.
  • 5% Assists with modification, development, and implementation of the Campus Master Plan to guide comprehensive development on campus.
  • 5% Coordinates and facilities public zoning and entitlement review/approval process for all major capital projects through the City of Madison and other local jurisdictions.
  • 5% Supports planning initiatives through engagement process assistance, conceptual alternative development, and graphic analysis and presentation.

Education:

Preferred
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major studies in planning, landscape design/architecture, architecture, architectural engineering, urban design, or other facilities planning and design related fields

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
– A minimum of 3 years of experience (internships count) in a planning, landscape design/architecture, urban design, architecture, architectural engineering or related field preferred.
– Demonstrated experience in planning and/or design field with an interest in campus planning and placemaking.
– Effective oral and written communication skills including technical writing.
– Excellent attention to details in all aspects of work.
– Ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
– Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills to resolve complicated problems.
– Skill and commitment to provide high quality customer service, efficiently and effectively.
– Strong graphic communication skills in site planning, diagramming, and report compilation.
– Experience with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Suite, ArcGIS and its application to the planning and/or landscape design process.
Ideal candidates will have past experience in planning at a variety of scales. In addition, the preferred candidate will be able to demonstrate they have experience with AutoCAD, Office Suite, Adobe Suite, and ArcGIS are desirable in addition to strong graphic and verbal communication skills. Ultimately, preferred applicants will be willing to work effectively at both the individual and team level while demonstrating initiative and knowledge to deliver on campus planning tasks.

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $67,500 ANNUAL (12 months)

The starting salary for the position is $67,500 annually but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
