Position Summary:
 
Strategic Communications & Public Affairs collaborates across campus and the health system to advance UCI’s reputation, mission, priorities and values through storytelling, relationship building, and an integrated communication approach that includes the following:
– Brand development and management: Cultivating an emotional connection and loyalty to the university by articulating the institution’s distinctive qualities, encouraging a positive experience, and developing and protecting the university’s identity, marks and graphic assets.
– Community relations & engagement: Creating opportunities for local political, community, and business leaders to engage with the university to support the connection between Orange County’s dynamic economy and its premiere research institution.
– Executive communications: Strengthening the presence and influence of university leaders – globally, regionally and within the campus – through effective messaging and outreach support.
– Government relations and advocacy: Engaging elected and appointed officials at the federal, state, regional and local levels to promote our research, education, and public service activities.
– Internal communications: Providing outreach assistance and information for UCI’s students, faculty and staff.
– Marketing: Developing effective tools and services to convey the university’s message, including advertising, presentations, promotional pieces and events.
– Media relations: Establishing mutually beneficial relationships with members of the media – from digital publications and social networks to production studios and news organizations – to support the accurate, appropriate and fair use of university information worldwide.
– Publications and digital properties: Creating books, magazines, newsletters, brochures, websites and other digital content that advance the university’s mission. Visual communications: Producing photography, videography, graphic design and other visual assets that help create compelling stories.
 
The recently appointed Vice Chancellor for Strategic Communications and Public Affairs Sherry Main is cultivating her leadership team. She is looking for exceptional talent to join her in elevating university strategic communications and public engagement to a new level. Together, they will serve UCI to further grow its affinity, advance meaningful connections, and champion the collaboration and successes of students, faculty and staff. The Assistant Vice Chancellor, Communications & Media Relations (AVC) leads the areas of internal and executive communications, issues and crisis management, and media relations. The AVC serves on the senior leadership group in the Office of Strategic Communications & Public Affairs — with frequent interaction with the Offices of the President, Chancellor, Provost, Vice Chancellors and Deans — and directly oversees critical programs that impact UCI’s reputation and prominence. The AVC is a strategist, developing proactive plans and programming that forge influential partnerships, advance UCI’s institutional priorities, and manage controversial issues. This includes building teams and allocating resources, effectively presenting ideas and trends, educating colleagues and constituents, identifying and softening potential crises, and measuring and reporting performance. They must be self-motivated yet collaborative, comfortable working independently within a large, complex enterprise serving multiple interests and constituents. This AVC serves as an authority on issues, messaging and relationships, including those at all levels of government – local, state, and federal – as well as within community organizations, media outlets, and internally. They cultivate and maintain influential relationships with elected and appointed officials, government agencies and programs, community and civic organizations, and media and campus leadership. They provide information and guidance regarding government actions, media activity, community perceptions, political implications, and strategic partnerships. The AVC is an expert in issues management. Directs the operations and activities of UCI media relations service, including strategic planning and program management, staff management, and budget development and administration. Oversees the media relations program focusing on international, national and local media, including print, broadcast and internet venues.

Required:
 
Ten plus years of experience working within a communications capacity, preferably serving large, complex organizations.
Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Advanced conflict resolution / negotiation and problem avoidance / resolution skills; and advanced political acumen.
Advanced management skills including personnel and budget administration and program management skills.
coaching, managing and inspiring diverse teams of varied maturity, experience and expertise.
Highly experienced knowledge and skill using new media venues such as internet applications.
Advanced knowledge of specific location issues and concerns as well as general issues and concerns in higher education.
Advanced written, oral and interpersonal communications skills.
Advanced knowledge of principles and concepts of journalism and media relations.
Advanced knowledge of advanced principles and practices in crisis and emergency communications.
Skill to establish an environment of and maintain strict confidentiality.
Understand and embrace diverse channels and platforms, including digital, print, interactive and electronic.
Highly experienced knowledge of the location including its vision, mission, goals, objectives and infrastructure.
Knowledge of effective communications strategies and planning, proactive media relations operations; integrated communication techniques utilizing multiple platforms and channels.
Understands strategic messaging and how to target specific audiences effectively.
 
Preferred:
 
Master’s degree in relevant field
