Normal Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 8:45am to 5:30pm

Job Summary: The assistant teacher is an integral part of the classroom teaching team and provides a safe and nurturing environment for children ages two months to five years. The assistant teacher works closely with the lead classroom teacher in planning for, and managing, a classroom of children, assuming the lead role with the children when the lead teacher is working with students, parents, administrators and/or faculty.

Additional Department Summary: The assistant teacher is an integral part of the classroom teaching team and provides a safe and nurturing environment for children ages two months to five years. The assistant teacher often helps to monitor and document activities for the practicum students as well as supervise the interns and substitute teachers. The assistant teacher is called upon to model developmentally appropriate practice for the students observing and participating in the classroom. In the absence of the lead teacher, the assistant teacher assumes the full responsibilities for the group of children and for the students participating in the classroom and supervises the substitute teachers. The assistant teacher will maintain and support a safe and healthy learning environment for all children in her/his care and encourage each child’s creativity and curiosity. Further, it is the responsibility of the assistant teacher to keep the lead teacher informed about significant communications, events or concerns involving the staff, lab students, or parents of children in the classroom. It is the assistant teacher responsibility to communicate daily reports of the children‘s activities and/or behavior to the parents during pick up at the end of the day.

Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience in a child care setting; OR an Associate’s degree and 6 months experience in a child care setting; OR Bachelor’s degree. The assistant teacher must be able to provide visual and auditory supervision of children.

Skills and Knowledge: Educational background in early childhood development Ability to model developmentally appropriate practice Ability to relate to young children, ages 2 months to 5 years. And to promote their social –emotional development, physical development, Cognitive development and development of age appropriate language and literacy skills. Ability to relate to parents Ability to relate to student participating in the HDFS lab school setting Ability to work with a diverse population.

Preferred Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or related field is preferred
