The Institute for Data Science and Computing (IDSC)’s has an exciting job opportunity for an Assistant Scientist to work at the Coral Gables Campus.

CORE JOB SUMMARY                                                                                                                                                                                                              

The Institute for Data Science and Computing (IDSC)’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) Assistant Scientist has the primary role of supporting research collaborations and projects with the UM research community, other academic institutions, and with industry to leverage (AI), (ML), and Optimization techniques to provide data-driven solutions to real world problems.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                           

The Assistant Scientist:

  • Assists in the design and implementation of novel AI/ML algorithms using a variety of datasets.
  • Collaborates with other scientists and engineers and together develop novel methods that combine cutting edge AI with expert domain knowledge.
  • Collaborates with IDSC’s software engineering team to design and implement AI platforms and scientific software solutions.
  • Publishes high impact research in peer reviewed journals.
  • Mentors staff, postdocs, and students.
  • Interacts with the larger AI community by attending conferences or workshops.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                            

Education:

Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree required

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience. Appropriate combination of relevant education and/or experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Expertise of programming in Python, R, C++, Java, Scala, OCaml, Rust, Go, etc. and using the Deep Learning tools such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc.
  • Expertise in using Big Data platforms and tools, including Hadoop, Pig, Hive, Spark, and MapReduce.
  • Understanding of data modeling and relational databases.
  • Broad knowledge of common machine learning frameworks,
  • Knowledge of distributed computing frameworks (e.g., Spark, Dask, Ray).
  • Understanding of service-oriented architectures
  • Knowledge of common frameworks for analytical applications (e.g., R/Shiny, Dash, H2O Wave
  • Ability to apply predictive models, and utilize natural language processing using massive data sets
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills, with the ability to conceptualize and communicate designs and plans, develop partnerships and collaborate with other researchers and industry partners.
  • Desire to be proactive and focus on continuous improvement, resulting in a culture of high performance.
