Job title:

Assistant Professorship (all genders) – Tenure Track

Company

Technische Universität Wien

Job description

Size-controlled Nanocluster CatalysisTU Wien is Austria’s largest institution of research and higher education in the fields of technology and natural sciences. With over 26,000 students and more than 4000 scientists, research, teaching, and learning dedicated to the advancement of science and technology have been conducted here for more than 200 years, guided by the motto “Technology for People”. As a driver of innovation, TU Wien fosters close collaboration with business and industry and contributes to the prosperity of society. At the Institute of Materials Chemistry, TU Wien is offering the following tenure track position from September 1st, 2024, full-time (40 hours/week).The candidate and TU Wien can agree upon a tenure evaluation, which when positive, opens the possibility to change the position to Associate Professor (all genders) with an unlimited contract. The tenure-track position is affiliated to the Institute of Materials Chemistry. Duties include research and teaching in the field of physical chemistry, synthesis, nanocatalysis- and spectroscopy. The main focus of research is on advancing atomically precise homogeneous and heterogeneous nanocatalysts, particularly utilizing monolayer-protected metal nanoclusters. This approach enables the development of catalytic materials with size controlled precision and high properties tuneability, including size, structure, composition, and ligand engineering. A key aspect of the research involves delving into atomic-level reaction mechanisms through operando spectroscopy techniques, notably infrared and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. These methods offer crucial insights into the intricate structure-activity relationships essential for catalyst development. The research scope covers environmental and energy-related applications as well as relevant pharmaceutical processes. This comprehensive approach emphasises the interdisciplinary nature of catalysis research and its far-reaching implications. A central aspect of the research portfolio is research into chiral nanocatalysis. This involves the use of atomically precise chiral nanoclusters immobilised on surfaces to facilitate asymmetric catalysis. An integral part of this research is the rigorous characterisation of chiral catalysts and their reactivity using chiral spectroscopic techniques.Tasks: Research:

  • Advanced knowledge and proven research achievements in the field of heterogeneous catalysis, nanomaterials, operando spectroscopy and chiral nanomaterials
  • Synthesis of metal nanoclusters as well as oxide support materials
  • Expertise in ligand engineering of metal nanostructures

Teaching:

  • The successful candidate will teach in classes and lab courses (physical chemistry) of the Bachelor and Master curricula in Technical Chemistry. The integration into the basic and research-based teaching, as well as the direct supervision of Bachelor, Master and PhD students is expected. The implementation of the research field in the teaching curriculum is expected in the medium term.

Your profile:

  • University Doctoral degree or equivalent in Technical Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
  • International Postdoctoral research stays at a university or research institution (ideally for several years and different host institutions)
  • Proven research achievements including international, peer-reviewed publications in relevant research fields
  • Experience in academic teaching (classes and lab courses) and supervising or co-supervising of bachelor, master and PhD students
  • Presentation record at international conferences including invited lectures
  • Experience in the acquisition and implementation of third-party funded projects
  • Proven funding in the mentioned research fields in highly competitive programs according to the TUW excellence – and female promotion Initiative (successful acquisition and management of a project according to the FWF-program to promote female scientists e.g. Elise-Richter) is mandatory
  • Proven expertise in leading and managing teams, coupled with an extensive professional network as well as on management tasks within the organization structure
  • Active involvement in promoting women in science through initiatives, mentoring and networking.Experience in designing and participating in research projects, as well as the willingness and ability to lead research groups, willingness to acquire third-party funding
  • English and German language skills
