Job title:
Assistant Professorship (all genders) – Tenure Track
Company
Technische Universität Wien
Job description
Data-driven atomistic simulations of materialsTU Wien is Austria’s largest institution of research and higher education in the fields of technology and natural sciences. With over 26,000 students and more than 4000 scientists, research, teaching, and learning dedicated to the advancement of science and technology have been conducted here for more than 200 years, guided by the motto “Technology for People”. As a driver of innovation, TU Wien fosters close collaboration with business and industry and contributes to the prosperity of society. The Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is offering the following tenure track position for 40 hours/week (6 years, with the possibility to gain an unlimited contract). Expected start: September 2024.The position is initially limited to a period of six years, but the candidate and TU Wien can agree upon a tenure evaluation, which when positive, opens the possibility to change the position to Associate Professor with an unlimited contract. The tenure-track position is affiliated to the Institute of Materials Science and Technology (E308), Research Unit “Materials Science” (E308-01). Duties include research and teaching in the field of density functional theory and molecular dynamic simulations. The focus of the research work is the development of a theoretical understanding of phase stability, defect formation, deformation and fracture mechanisms in ceramic materials and thin films on an atomic scale.Tasks: Research:
- Atomistic simulations of phase stability, mechanical properties and deformation behavior of ceramic-based thin films
- Development of workflows and simulation concepts for the prediction of material properties and behavior at relevant temperatures, including extreme conditions (e.g. high mechanical loads), in the context of ab initio and molecular dynamics
- Development of workflows for efficient training of interatomic potentials for molecular dynamics simulations by machine learning
- Data-driven high-throughput design of ceramic-based materials with desired structure-property combinations
- Atomistic simulations of deformation and fracture initiation processes
- Support of ongoing experimental investigations with ab initio and/or molecular dynamics simulations, as well as the development of targeted experiments to support theoretical predictions
Teaching:
- In teaching, it is intended that courses in the field of programming and simulation will be covered by means of the career position through independent delivery or collaboration in lectures and project work
Your profile:
- A domestic or equivalent foreign university degree with a doctorate (in physics or mechanical engineering, specializing in materials science)
- Pedagogic and didactic suitability for academic teaching in the relevant subject in German and/or English
- Excellent scripting and programming skills
- Profound knowledge in ab initio and molecular dynamics calculations with a focus on mechanistic simulations
- Advanced experience with machine learning techniques and with the development of interatomic potentials with machine learning
- Experience with simulations for ceramic thin films and nano-laminated materials is an advantage
- Outstanding achievements and potential in research, excellent publication record, international reputation
- Relevant teaching experience in academic teaching and the supervision and co-supervision of academic theses
- Ability to collaborate with other research groups at TU Wien and with national and international research partners
- Joint theoretical and experimental projects/publications that demonstrate the ability to collaborate with experimental colleagues
- Experience in the conception and implementation of research projects as well as the willingness and ability to lead research groups, willingness to acquire third-party funding
- Own funding during the postdoc phase and experience abroad in the context of research stays, for example via FWF Hertha Firnberg Programme, is desirable
- In case there is no adequate knowledge of German, willingness to quickly learn German is presupposed for teaching in bachelor programmes and participation in management of the institute and the faculty as well as in university bodies
