Basic Function:
The Department of Communicative Disorders (CMD) at the University of Rhode Island invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level with expertise in acquired disorders of voice, swallowing, and/or motor speech. We seek a strong researcher who can contribute to our mission of advancing the health and well-being of individuals with communication disorders across the lifespan, and their families. Position to start August 2025.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop a successful research program that includes high impact publications and external funding to support research and graduate students.
- Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses in areas of expertise and need in the department.
- Participate in service-related activities that support the mission of the department, college, university, and profession.
Qualifications
Required:
1. PhD (or ABD with the expectation of completion by hire date) in Communication Sciences & Disorders, or in a related discipline.
2. Demonstrated potential for publishing high-impact scholarly research.
3. Demonstrated potential for success in obtaining external funding to support a vibrant research agenda.
4. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in teaching, scholarship, service, and/or the delivery of clinical services, including the ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
5. Demonstrated strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
6. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.
Preferred:
1. Demonstrated potential for teaching excellence.
2. Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology under the auspices of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and eligibility for Rhode Island licensure.
3. Interest in and aptitude for interdisciplinary research.

The Department of Communicative Disorders is housed within the College of Health Sciences (https://web.uri.edu/chs/about/), which consists of 7 departments (Physical Therapy, Kinesiology, Psychology, Nutrition, Human Development and Family Science, and Pubic Health) as well as the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program, creating many opportunities for collaborative research and clinical initiatives. The College also offers an interdisciplinary PhD program in Health Sciences (https://web.uri.edu/chs/academics/phd-in-health-sciences/), with a specialization in Communicative Disorders.
CMD currently has about 45 graduate students in its MS-SLP program and over 250 undergraduate majors. The program received initial ASHA accreditation in 1985 and is currently accredited through 2029. The URI Speech and Hearing Center is located in the department and provides comprehensive services to the Rhode Island community, as well as serving as a clinical training site for our students.
