Assistant Professor – Tenure-Track – Film Studies – Languages & Literatures – 18863

ATTENTION:

 The Department of Languages & Literatures in the College of Letters & Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor beginning in August 2023 with film and media studies training and the ability to teach documentary film production, professional writing, and/or general education courses. This is a full-time position with responsibilities for teaching, research, and service to the university and community.

JOB DETAILS:

We are seeking someone with the ability to teach several introductory and upper-level courses in the Film Studies program, including Critical Writing in Multimedia Contexts, Gender and Film, Film Genre, Queer Cinema, Cinema Auteurs, Film Theory, or other courses the candidate may develop given their specific research and teaching interests. The ideal candidate will also be able to teach courses in Professional Writing & Publishing (e.g., PWP 372, Technical and Professional Writing) or General Education. General Education courses may include either the upper-level CORE 390 (World of Ideas) or the First Year English Sequence. In addition to teaching, candidates will be expected to pursue an active research agenda that engages undergraduate students, results in publications, and contributes to advancing the department, university, and profession. The candidate will also be expected to participate in service activities that contribute to the program, department, and college.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum qualifications

·     A terminal degree in a relevant field is required.

·     ABD candidates may apply but must complete their degree by the contract start date in August 2023.

·     Candidates must have significant training in film and media studies.

·     Expertise and teaching interests in documentary film production, professional writing, LGBTQ+ studies, race and ethnicity, and global cinema.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Full-time teaching responsibilities include a 4/4 teaching load, which in any given semester is expected to consist of two courses in Film Studies and two sections of general education or professional writing. Faculty members are also encouraged to engage students in at least one of the following high-impact teaching practices: project-based production experiences, undergraduate research, travel study, and internships. Research expectations require peer-reviewed research and/or creative activity relevant to the discipline. Service responsibilities include committee work at the departmental, college, and university levels as well as participation in community and professional organizations relevant to the candidate’s expertise and interests.

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

The Film Studies program began operation in 2012-2013 within the Department of Languages and Literatures. Film Studies now offers major, minor, and certificate curricular paths. An interdisciplinary program, Film Studies includes affiliate faculty members from several programs across the University, including Professional Writing and Publishing, History, Art History, Communication, Race and Ethnic Studies, Liberal Studies, Media Arts and Game Development, and Women’s and Gender Studies.
