Job Description:

Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the department of Communication Studies beginning in August of the 2023-2024 academic year. The successful candidate will teach under graduate Communication courses, specializing in interpersonal and/or intercultural communication, as well as one or more courses in the college’s first-year liberal studies program. The candidate can demonstrate their ability to do so with instructional experience and/or graduate coursework and research.  Interpersonal and intercultural communication are broad fields, and the department is open to a wide range of expertise for this position. Other responsibilities include: advising students; participating in course and program development; pursuing scholarly and professional activities; performing college and professional service; working cooperatively with diverse groups; and helping students engage with, lead, and serve their communities.

Our department is one of the college’s largest. It is highly productive, cheerful, collaborative and flexible. Our curriculum has twice received NCA’s Rex Mix Award for Excellence. Department faculty are regularly called upon to provide leadership to the campus and community, and we work with a bright, diverse and ambitious group of students. Our new colleague will help re-imagine and reconstruct our major as we continue to keep our curriculum inclusive and forward-reaching.

Requirements:

Requirements: Preference will be given to candidates who will have completed their Ph.D. by the time of appointment, although ABD candidates will also be considered. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate teaching effectiveness, a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and the value of a broadly educated person, a commitment to fostering equity and inclusion, the ability to work with students in and out of the classroom, the ability to engage undergraduate students in an active research agenda, the ability to positively contribute to the department’s and the college’s climate, and the potential to develop and strengthen relationships with campus and community partners. Experience and interest in working with students and community members of many backgrounds will be an asset for applicants.
