Summary of Duties:

The Sport Management program at Washington State University Pullman, WA is soliciting applications for a permanent tenure-track assistant professor position in sport management. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research in their area of expertise within sport management, be able to teach a broad range of undergraduate courses in sport management as well as graduate courses in their area of expertise, provide service to the university, and engage with campus and local communities. The typical contractual load for a tenure-track assistant professor is 40% teaching (two courses per semester), 40% research and 20% service. We are seeking candidates with a focused research agenda and the ability to secure external funding or evidence of potential to do so. Candidates who can demonstrate engagement in interdisciplinary work, foster scholarly connections among current faculty and contribute to diversity, equity and inclusion efforts are especially encouraged to apply. The College of Education seeks applicants who can demonstrate knowledge and ability to work effectively with individuals and groups with a variety of identities, cultures and backgrounds.

Required Qualifications:

• An earned Ph.D. in sport management, sport administration or closely related field by the position start date;

• Evidence of high-quality research;

• Ability to effectively teach a broad range of undergraduate courses in sport management;

• Demonstrated pursuit of (or evidence of potential to secure) external funding.

Preferred Qualifications:

About the Program and Department

The Washington State University Sport Management program’s mission is to provide students with the essential theoretical and empirical knowledge, professional skills, learning experiences, and academic support needed to succeed in life. We are committed to transformative research and scholarship, as well as to multimodal engagement with an array of community and sport industry stakeholders. Through the development of professional and collaborative networks, we strive to create and sustain a diverse, global presence.

The program was founded in the early 1980s by athletic administrators and educators who were Title IX pioneers in the state of Washington. It is housed in the Department of Educational Leadership and Sport Management and is taught face-to-face at WSU Pullman. It employs faculty from four continents and offers bachelor of arts (https://education.wsu.edu/undergradprograms/sportmanagement/ , approx. 70 graduating students per year) and master of arts (https://education.wsu.edu/graduate/sportmanagement/ , approx. 15 graduating students per year) degrees in sport management. The master’s program was ranked #20 in 2020 and #33 in 2021 in the SportBusiness Postgaduate Course Rankings. The program maintains successful collaborations with the Department of Athletics (a Pac-12 Conference member) and University Recreation, as well as with many other sport organizations in the Pacific Northwest and beyond, many of which are staffed with program alumni.
