Position #20401 – The Ivan Curry School of Engineering invites applications for a 9.5-month contractually-limited term (CLT) appointment as a lecturer/assistant professor, commencing August 1, 2024. The School provides the first two years of education towards a Bachelor of Engineering. The successful applicant will be responsible for the preparation and delivery of core engineering courses requiring expertise in chemical engineering. The Fall semester’s tentative assignment will include one course in Thermodynamics (Thermo-Fluids 1, APSC 2113) consisting of 3 hours of lecture and 3 hours of tutorial each week. The Winter semester’s tentative assignment will include one course in the Fundamentals of Process Engineering (APSC 3313), which is a discipline-specific course for chemical engineering students comprised of 3 hours of lecture and 3 hours of tutorial each week. An additional course (3 hours lecture & 3 hours tutorial), at the discretion of the School in consideration of the candidate’s expertise and timetable scheduling, will be either one course in Digital Systems (APSC 2223, Fall semester), one course in Programming 1 (APSC 1413, Winter semester), one course in Programming 2 (APSC 2613, Winter semester), or one course in Engineering Economics (APSC 2413, Winter semester). Any remaining teaching hour requirements may include delivering a tutorial or helping in another course. General course duties include the preparation of course content; creation and grading of quizzes, assignments, tests, and a final exam; the collection of graduate attribute data for accreditation; as well as providing student support during six scheduled office hours per week.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate for the position would have had previous experience teaching courses in engineering; experience teaching Thermodynamics and Fundamentals of Process Engineering would be an asset. A PhD in engineering is the normal minimum qualification for this position, but candidates with significant professional experience and a master’s degree in the areas of expertise outlined above will also be considered in lieu of a PhD. Registration as a professional engineer (P.Eng.) or an engineer-in-training (EIT) in a Canadian jurisdiction is required. Upon commencement of this position, the candidate must be committed to becoming licensed with Engineers Nova Scotia, and must maintain their licensure in good standing for the duration of this contract.
Candidates are encouraged to provide a description of any teaching related experience, such as lab instruction, tutorial supervision, teaching assistantships, classroom activities, lecturing experience, or potential as a teacher; this can include past experience, examples of innovative approaches to teaching or ideas for teaching, and supervision or leadership of students. Applicants are encouraged to show evidence of developing scholarly activity, including, but not limited to, research and publications. The successful applicant will also contribute to the service activities of the Department and are encouraged to indicate any previous contributions to a department, faculty, or university, including course and program development, as well as any contributions to the discipline or profession.
