Position Summary The Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music at the University of Memphis seeks an experienced artist-teacher for a tenure-track faculty appointment in voice, to begin August 2023. The School of Music’s Vocal Arts Area is a highly collaborative, multidimensional area of the Performance Studies Division offering the BM, MM, AD and DMA degree programs.
Responsibilities:

  • Teach individual voice lessons at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Teach area-related classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels, such as vocal pedagogy, lyric diction, or song repertoire.
  • Plan and supervise student recitals at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Organize and lead weekly voice studio classes.
  • Commit to recruiting, mentoring, and teaching students from diverse musical backgrounds, especially first-generation college students.
  • Recruit and maintain a studio that meets the needs of the School of Music.
  • Advise doctoral committees and projects, and lecture recitals.
  • Contribute to the University of Memphis Voice Area’s visibility through engagement in significant professional activities including maintaining regional, national and international visibility in performance, external masterclasses, conference presentations, publications, services to the school/college/university/community, and mentoring students.
Minimum Position Qualifications
  • Tenor voices required with expertise in teaching.
  • Doctorate required with ABD considered.
  • Teaching experience at the highest level of excellence at the graduate and/or professional level with a proven record of student success.
  • Demonstrated a high level of national and/or international professional performance experience. Candidates who are accomplished in performing across diverse musical styles and performance traditions are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated commitment to pedagogy and recruitment.
  • A strong interest in and experience with community engagement, music entrepreneurship, music leadership, and/or other nontraditional career models is desirable.
  • The candidates’ accomplishments for this position must reflect their commitment to working with an inclusive student population and their ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and collective mission, vision, and operating standards of the School of Music.
