The University of Rhode Island’s Feinstein College of Education seeks applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and/or Bilingual/Dual Language Education. This is a full-time, nine-month appointment beginning in Fall 2024. The search committee is particularly interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching, and/or service, will enhance the College’s commitment to anti-racism, diversity, equity, and academic excellence.
The University of Rhode Island is a research-intensive university (Carnegie R1 research classification, as of January 2025) with a commitment to high-quality teaching and community partnerships. The Feinstein College of Education is a community of educational scholars, leaders, and practitioners with a shared commitment to enhancing equity and inclusion within and outside of schools, bridging research and practice, and serving diverse and underserved populations. Rhode Island is a diverse, multilingual state, with 11% of students identified as multilingual learners (MLL). The Rhode Island Department of Education’s Blueprint for MLL Success and Strategic Plan outline the state’s commitment to better serving this student population and to supporting and growing the state’s bilingual/dual language program offerings. It is an exciting time to work in TESOL and bilingual/dual language education in the state.
The successful candidate will participate as a core faculty member in a robust and growing TESOL/BDL program that includes faculty with expertise in refugee youth, translanguaging pedagogy, glocalization, teacher education, school leadership, language program evaluation, identity negotiation, and bilingual education. The selected candidate will be expected to conduct scholarly activities such as research in a particular field of knowledge and submit for publication and/or presentation at professional conferences; teach undergraduate and graduate courses; participate in department and university committees; and develop and maintain collaborative and professional partnerships with local schools and districts.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Developing and maintaining an appropriate agenda of research and funding; teaching courses for TESOL and bilingual/dual language education, including, but not limited to second language acquisition, methods of TESOL/bilingual education, advising undergraduate and graduate students; and engaging in sustainable partnerships with local schools and districts to build knowledge and improve practices that serve multilingual students.
