Position Details
| General Statement | The Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology (PSPP) Department conducts research and teaches in the broad areas of agronomy, horticulture, landscape design, sustainable crop production, plant biology, plant pathology, genetics, and entomology. This faculty position will contribute to the landscape design curricula and research/creative activity that is integrated within the environmental horticulture area of the department. As the largest horticulture program and only landscape design degree in Montana, faculty, staff, and students work to shape the landscapes, community environments, and food systems in semi-arid climates, for addressing concerns of sustainability, climate change, and social equity. We seek applicants who can teach in a diverse University community, possess exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, and have demonstrated ability in helping landscape design and horticulture students succeed. |

| Duties and Responsibilities | The successful candidate will develop an innovative and collaborative teaching program relevant to the missions of the Department, College, and University. Instructional responsibilities include at least four, 3- or 4-credit lecture or studio courses annually relating to landscape design/architecture. Specific teaching opportunities include courses on sustainable landscape design, planting design, landscape construction, landscape theory and history, landscape graphics, and residential and commercial site design. Interdisciplinary projects, community engagement, service-learning, and other high quality high-impact educational practices are encouraged. The successful candidate will also advise undergraduate and graduate students in academic and research/creative activities that relate to landscape design. This tenure-track position requires that the successful candidate develop a focused program of research/creative activity integrated with teaching activities and directed at solving issues in landscape design relevant to Montana and the region. Possible scholarship areas include but are not limited to: water conservation, wildland-urban interface and land use planning, residential design, design-build, community design, ecology and restoration, parks and recreation, and planting design. Collaborative research and scholarship related to teaching and learning are also encouraged. This individual will support their research with extramural funding and publish original scholarship/creative activity in refereed journals or other appropriate venues, and receive awarded recognition through professional associations for creative activity. |

| The Program | The Environmental Horticulture program covers a broad spectrum of horticulture-related fields, with the Landscape Design option/major focusing on the holistic ability to plan, design, build, and/or manage landscapes at a range of scales. |
| The Department | The Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology (PSPP) Department, housed in the College of Agriculture, offers a B.S. degree in four majors, an M.S. degree in Plant Pathology or Plant Sciences, and a Ph.D. degree in Plant Sciences. The Department has a state-of-the-art building that is well-equipped with access to the Plant Growth Center greenhouse facility, a 10-acre horticulture farm that includes a student-run market garden, a pollinator garden, and a 250-acre agronomic research farm. The dedicated landscape design teaching facility has a studio, lab, and computer/printing resources. In addition, seven off-campus research centers across the state offer further collaborative research opportunities. |
