Description

The Department of Marine Affairs (MAF) in the College of Environment and Life Sciences (CELS) at the University of Rhode Island (URI) is seeking an Assistant Professor of Marine Affairs with expertise in Fisheries Management and Policy, a core area of the Department’s curriculum since its inception. This scholar will be trained in quantitative and/or qualitative approaches drawing from one or more disciplines, such as marine affairs, law, economics, ecology, political science, environmental science or studies, sociology, anthropology, history, geography, public policy, or related fields.

Fisheries are fundamental components of human life support systems, supporting a range of functions that include subsistence, nutrition, commerce, recreation, therapy, identity, cultural values, and natural capital. Management and Policy can be construed broadly, to include aspects of global fishing such as livelihoods and lifeways, commercial or non-commercial fisheries, fishing communities, fisheries science, aquaculture, ecosystem-based management, and other practices and patterns relevant to fishing activity. Thus, possible areas of focus may include, but are not limited to, any of the following: legal, political, social, economic, and cultural dimensions of aquaculture and/or wild-caught commercial and non-commercial fisheries. Research areas may further include themes like the following:Equity and justice in fisheries management; Indigenous fisheries management; US fisheries policy; International fisheries management; Key actors in fisheries management (e.g., firms, scientists, NGOs, crew); Small-scale, industrialized, and/or trans-boundary fisheries; Fishing household and community studies, Interactions of fisheries with offshore infrastructure; Marine foods in the global food system; Sustainable seafoods; Fisheries economics; Human dimensions of fishery management; Fisheries social impact assessment; Human rights and fisheries sector reform.

This position will support core elements of Marine Affairs programming and the applicant will join a department whose faculty have local, regional, and national expertise in the United States, Indonesia, Ghana, Ecuador, Vietnam, The Bahamas, Iceland, and several other parts of the world. The Marine Affairs Department welcomes applicants from historically marginalized communities and identities. We are interested in applicants that can incorporate aspects of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion across their research, teaching, and service duties. This position’s responsibilities are 50% Research, 40% Teaching, and 10% Service (described below). The anticipated start date is August 2023.

Qualifications

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Publish original research in peer-reviewed academic journals and other significant research outputs that may include book manuscripts published by an academic press, governmental research reports, and multi-media publications based in film or other formats with meaningful impact.

● Establish a competitively funded research program.

● Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses relevant to the Marine Affairs program, including an undergraduate course related to fisheries management and policy (currently MAF 330: World Fishing) and a graduate course related to fisheries management and policy (currently MAF 523: Fisheries Law and Management). The position also allows for the creation and delivery of new and additional courses related to the Marine Affairs curriculum.

● Provide advising, training, and research mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students.

● Provide service to the department, college, university and profession.

● Provide communication, outreach, engagement with communities relevant to research program.

● Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:

1. Ph.D. at time of appointment in marine affairs, law, economics, ecology, environmental studies, political science, sociology, anthropology, history, geography, or related fields.

2. Demonstrated ability to conduct and apply research about fisheries management and policy.

3. Evident potential to develop and instruct high quality undergraduate and graduate courses relevant to fisheries management and policy.

4. Evident potential to develop a strong, competitively-funded research program.

5. A record of empirical research supported by accepted scholarly methods.

6. Evidence of research excellence as shown by publications and/or presentations at national and international meetings and conferences and through other research outputs.

7. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

8. Demonstrated proficiency in oral communication skills.

9. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

PREFERRED:

1. Demonstrated commitment to advancing justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

2. Demonstrated experience in serving the needs of diverse student populations.

3. Demonstrated experience in engagement and outreach to diverse communities and publics.

4. Demonstrated potential to engage in collaborative interdisciplinary scholarship.

5. Direct experience in the fisheries sector, or direct knowledge of and engagement with fisher communities.

6. Demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate and graduate courses related to fisheries management and policy.

7. Proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English
