The Department of English at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga invites applications for the position of tenure-track assistant professor of English, beginning August 2023, with primary specialization in poetry. The successful candidate will be available to teach poetry at the undergraduate level as well as additional courses on style, editing, readings in poetry, and writing for publication. Teaching responsibilities include a 3/3 load.

Qualifications:

  • MFA or Ph.D. in Creative Writing and a demonstrated record of substantial publication in journals with a national reputation and/or a book or chapbook from a trade, university, or distinguished small press;
  • demonstrated excellence in and commitment to undergraduate teaching; excellent writing, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • A secondary specialization and publication in another creative genre is preferred.
  • Candidates who are ABD will be considered but must complete their PhD before the end of the 2023-2024 academic year.

The search committee will begin screening applications immediately and continue until November 15, 2022.

  • Sample syllabus for an undergraduate poetry workshop,
  • Writing sample of 10-15 pages
  • Names, titles, and email addresses for 3 references. Letters of recommendation will be requested from all on campus finalists.

Candidates should be prepared to describe their experience working successfully with diverse populations along the intersections of first-generation college students, returning older students, lower income status, dis/ability, race/ethnicity, gender, immigration status, and/or veterans.
