Assistant Professor of Biology

The Department of Biology invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Biology, beginning August 2023. The specific area of expertise for this position is flexible, but scholars focused on or capable of teaching courses in ecology at the population, community, or ecosystem level, or traditional ecological knowledge will be of particular interest. We also recognize that our curriculum could be fruitfully expanded to consider more connections between science and society. Teaching responsibilities (equivalent to 5 courses/year) will include contributions to the biology and general education curricula (e.g., course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) course at the 100- and 200-level, biostatistics, upper-level courses in the candidate’s area of specialty, and First Year Seminar). As with all tenure-track and tenured members of the department, the candidate will mentor research projects with undergraduates that are part of a larger independent research program.

Bates College, a private, highly selective, SAT/ACT-test optional, residential college in Lewiston, Maine is devoted to undergraduate study in the liberal arts. We bring together students from 48 states and 59 countries, 12% of whom are first generation to college and 27% are US students of color. In addition to expanding the population of students of color on campus by 42% over the past 10 years, Bates was recently chosen to participate in the Schuler Access Initiative where we will expand and support the number of students from the lowest income and undocumented families in the U.S. over the next decade. As well, over the past five years, half of the number of new tenure track faculty hired have identified as BIPOC. The institution is well resourced with respect to teaching and research spaces, including state of the art laboratory facilities, greenhouse, and Bates Morse Mountain Conservation Area.

Bates and the Biology Department are committed to enhancing equity and inclusiveness of the campus and the curriculum. To that end, the college has resources to maintain our work in this area, including a HHMI Inclusive Excellence grant for STEM-focused work and a Mellon Curricular Transformation grant for the humanities and humanistic social sciences. The college has also launched a new Center for Inclusive Teaching and Learning to cultivate evidence- based teaching and reflective practices.
