Assistant Professor of Anthropology, University of Virginia, 2022

Assistant Professor of Anthropology, University of Virginia, 2022

The University of Virginia Department of Anthropology seeks to hire an Assistant Professor (tenure track), whose work engages the intersection of indigeneity and race in global comparative perspective. Applicants should have a track record of community-based research and collaborative methodologies. We are particularly interested in applicants involved with networks of interdisciplinary knowledge production, in and beyond traditional academic spaces. Geographic specialization is open, including multi-sited approaches. Socio-cultural anthropologists with these qualifications are encouraged to apply, as are scholars from other anthropological sub-fields and related disciplines.

Candidates must have a PhD in anthropology or cognate discipline at the time of application. Additionally, we seek candidates who have an ongoing program of research and publication (commensurate with years since PhD), demonstrated excellence in teaching, and the ability to teach courses that contribute centrally to the Department’s PhD program and undergraduate major (with a 2/2 load). Responsibilities also include mentoring diverse undergraduate and graduate students, contributing to the Department and University through service, and seeking external funding to support an active research program. The successful candidate will further our understanding of the overlaps and intersections of indigeneity and race, the racialization of indigenous groups, and the ways in which these experiences are negotiated by peoples in specific communities and across multiple scales and contexts.

Preferred: within this topical framework, we are seeking a colleague who will help enhance key strengths and commitments of our current faculty – including material, spatial, and temporal dimensions of power and inequality; comparative studies of racism and racial regimes; ethnographic research and writing for diverse audiences; in situ sustainability and environmental care; foodways, health and healing; social movements, human rights and humanitarianism; decolonizing methodologies; community-based heritage management and curation; and grassroots language documentation and revitalization. We have a strong preference for someone who will strengthen our interdisciplinary connections across and beyond the College of Arts and Sciences, through, for example, participation in one of more of the following: the Black and Indigenous Feminist Futures Institute, the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American and African Studies, the Indigenous Studies PhD Certificate, the Native and Indigenous Studies Undergraduate Minor, Global Studies, the Environmental Humanities, and Environmental Thought and Practice. Accordingly, we will prefer candidates who work productively with colleagues, within and across disciplines, are skilled at communicating with diverse audiences through a variety of mediums and have the organizational and interpersonal skills to help lead new research and curricular initiatives in the department and beyond.

Salary is commensurate with education and experience.

The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. A completed pre-employment health screen is required for this position prior to employment.
