Campus: St. George (Downtown Toronto)
Description:
The Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning (CTL) at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor with a specialization in Indigenous Studies in Education. The appointment will commence on July 1, 2025, or shortly thereafter.
Candidates must have earned a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in Education, Indigenous Studies, or a closely related field by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek to recruit an emerging or early-career scholar with a focus on contemporary Indigenous perspectives on teaching and learning. We especially welcome those applicants who could contribute to a proposed Indigenous Land-based Teacher Education Pathway in the Master of Teaching program.
Applicants must also demonstrate ongoing connections to and engagement with Indigenous communities in relation to their research and/or pedagogy. Preference will be given to applicants who self-identify as Indigenous. Recognizing that there are a variety of terms that potential applicants may use to self-identify, the University uses the term “Indigenous” in this search, which forms part of the U of T Response to Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, to encompass the people of Turtle Island, including those who identify as First Nations, Métis, Inuk (Inuit), Alaska Native, Native American, and Native Hawaiian people.
We seek applicants whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance existing departmental strengths. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative, independent, and community-based research, and to establish a competitive and externally funded research program.
Applicants must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at conferences and to community stakeholders, awards and accolades, as well as strong endorsements from referees.
Evidence of excellence in teaching at the university level is required, and will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference. Experience in K-12 educational settings will be considered an asset.
In addition, candidates are expected to demonstrate in their application materials a commitment to social justice, equity, accessibility and engagement in education, and the ability to work in diverse contexts and with diverse student populations. The successful candidate will be committed to the academic success of all of our students and foster an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates diversity and differences.
Responsibilities of the position include teaching courses in the Master of Teaching program as well as in the Curriculum and Pedagogy program and/or Language and Literacies Education program.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning offers graduate programs in Language and Literacies Education, Curriculum and Pedagogy, and the Master of Teaching, a two-year initial teacher education program.
