The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in health professions education. A primary role of the successful candidate will be to teach in and support the graduate programs in health education, offered in French. The successful candidate will have a PhD and demonstrated ability to lead a program of scholarship and/or research relevant to health professions education.

The Department of Innovation in Medical Education (DIME) will be the primary academic home for the successful applicant but affiliation with the Faculty of Education will be encouraged. DIME boasts a vibrant education research community, with many linkages including, but not limited to, Montfort Hospital, the Institut du Savoir Montfort, the Ottawa Hospital, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, and the University of Ottawa Skills and Simulation Centre.

The graduate programs in health education in French have been offered jointly by the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Education since September 2021. At the Faculty of Medicine, Francophone Affairs is a key partner in delivering all programs of health education in French, and they work closely with the incumbent on all aspects of the programs. The successful candidate will work closely with directors and other key players of the program in both Faculties. This unique partnership has been established to update the existing programs and better adapt them to the needs of clinicians and other health professionals, among others. Included in this endeavour are microprograms, a graduate diploma, and a master’s degree.

In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to develop and lead a program of scholarship and/or research, including securing funding and peer-reviewed dissemination. This position offers protected time for research, resources to assist in grant capture, support for individual professional development and opportunities for productive collaboration with clinicians, researchers, and educators from a variety of disciplines.

Title of the position: Assistant Professor. The higher ranks will only be considered should the successful candidate possess the appropriate level of experience.

Number of positions available: One (1)

Duties: The functions of a member of the academic staff include, in varying proportions: a) teaching activities; b) scholarly activities revealed by research, artistic or literary creation, or professional work and c) academic service activities.

Terms: Tenure-track position.

Salary: Assistant Professor salary scale commensurate according to APUO salary scale. Note: salary for higher ranks is proportional according to rank and experience.

Relocation expenses: The successful candidate may be eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses in accordance with University policy.

Skills requirements:

  • Education: PhD in social sciences, sociology, education, psychology, or other disciplines relevant to health education, or an MD/PhD.
  • Work experience: A demonstrated excellent scholarship and/or research track record in a domain relevant to health professions education and the ability to lead a high-quality independent research program with peer-reviewed funding and dissemination at a national and/or international level. A demonstrated track record in teaching and training at the graduate level and a demonstrated ability for interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Language: Programs in health education under this position are offered in French. Proficiency in French is therefore required at time of hire, as well as excellent communication skills in English.

Selected candidates will be invited for a full-day interview (including a research seminar, interview with the selection committee, and meetings with members of the Faculty of Medicine) during late October or early-to-mid November.

The selected candidate will be expected to start in the role no later than March 15th, 2024.
