| Description | The School of Marine and Environmental Programs (SMEP) in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at the University of New England (UNE) invites applications for a full-time, nine-month Assistant Professor with expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) starting in August 2023. The successful candidate will join a group of engaged and research-active faculty and professional staff in SMEP, offering undergraduate programs in Climate Change Studies, Marine Sciences, Marine Affairs, Marine Entrepreneurship, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, GIS, and Sustainability and Business. SMEP also offers master’s programs in Marine Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Studies, and Ocean Food Systems. | Responsibilities | The school seeks candidates to teach courses in GIS, including Fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems, Applications of Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing, Spatial Analysis, as well as other courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. The candidate may also teach Introduction to Environmental Issues, a required course for all students in CAS. This position typically teaches the equivalent of 9 credits per semester. The candidate is expected to develop an active, independent research program involving undergraduate students that is supported by external funding and results in peer-reviewed publications. The successful candidate will also participate in academic advising, recruiting, curriculum development, course and program assessment, and service to the school, college and university. |
| Qualifications | A Ph.D. in GIS, geography, environmental studies, spatial analysis, or a related discipline is required discipline by the time of appointment. Substantive working knowledge of GIS, global positioning systems (GPS), cartography, remote sensing, drones, and spatial analysis is also required. Candidates must have a strong interest and proven record of including undergraduate students in their research. We are open to diverse research interests provided they are complementary to SMEP’s interdisciplinary mission. Preference will be given to candidates with post-doctoral training or equivalent professional experience. Candidates with undergraduate teaching experience are also preferred. |
