Assistant Professor Digital Construction and Project Management

Published Deadline Location
today 13 Nov Delft

You appreciate scientific and engineering challenges in the field of digitization in the construction industry and can, through research, management skills, and teaching qualities, inspire colleagues.

Job description

Within the construction industry digitization is of paramount importance for delivering successful projects. For instance, Building Information Systems (BIM) have been developed over the past decades and are nowadays widely spread. Novel developments, such as serious gaming, digital twins, nD BIM, data analytics, machine learning and the use of artificial intelligence, virtual/augmented reality, parametric and generative design, asset information systems and decision support systems become more and more crucial for the future of project management.

Examples of interfaces between digitization and project management can be found in developments such as integrated project delivery, lean construction, business intelligence and more general the implications of digitization for project delivery and the project team.

Digitization relates to nearly all steps in the construction process, from (integral) design, decision making, contracting, building of the asset and the management of civil engineering assets. Furthermore, resilience of civil engineering structures and systems, risk mitigation and climate change are topics where digitization is of major relevance.

This new position is considered to be pivotal within a number of sub‐disciplines such as integral design, structural design, construction technology, with project management as an overarching discipline. In this perspective, digitization is not only relevant for construction management at the systems scale, but it also links to digital fabrication processes at material and structures scale, which is investigated in other groups of the 3MD department.

You will contribute to both research and education in the fields of digital construction, project management, and especially the interplay between these fields.

As part of this role you are also expected to establish a scientifically strong, externally funded research program.

Department
Faculty Civil Engineering and Geosciences

The Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences (CEG) is committed to outstanding international research and education in the field of civil engineering, applied earth sciences, traffic and transport, water technology, and delta technology. Our research feeds into our educational programmes and covers societal challenges such as climate change, energy transition, resource depletion, urbanisation and the availability of clean water, conducted  in close cooperation with a wide range of research institutions. CEG is convinced that Open Science helps to achieve our goals and supports its scientists in integrating Open Science in their research practice. The Faculty of CEG comprises 28 research groups in the following seven departments: Materials Mechanics Management & Design, Engineering Structures, Geoscience and Engineering, Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Transport & Planning, Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management.

The position is located within the department of Materials, Mechanics, Management & Design (3MD). 3MD focusses on the design, construction and management of civil infrastructures and buildings. A multi-scale research approach is followed, starting at micro-scale (materials), to meso-scale (structures) and to macro-scale (infrastructures/systems). The department covers the entire life cycle of materials/structures/systems from design, management, maintenance to demolition or reuse. The department has strong competences in modelling and design for civil infrastructures as well as buildings. Integral Design and Management (IDM) is one of the three groups within the department.

The viewpoint of IDM is that a comprehensive view of the life cycle of structures and networks should generate maximum value (social, economic) for all stakeholders concerned. The group focusses on integral design, project management, construction technology, and engineering systems design. More specifically, attention is paid to transdisciplinary collaboration, sustainability, information systems, building information modelling, systems optimization, learning from projects, new forms of contracts and entrepreneurial engineering.

IDM hosts the master Construction Management and Engineering and the two minors Project Management from Nano to Mega and Integrated Infrastructure Design.

IDM carries out research for NWO, TTW, EU, and with industry partners. IDM has 10 staff and over 15 PhD’s.
