About the Department
The Myron E. Ullman, Jr. School of Design prepares its students to be skilled professionals who can ably work in local and global markets while respecting the diversity of humanity. The Myron E. Ullman, Jr. School of Design is innovative in teaching and evolving the design disciplines by infusing learning with the newest design thinking methods and technologies. Through inspired interdisciplinary projects and solid corporate partnerships, the Myron E. Ullman, Jr. School of Design is devoted to furthering its role as a leading design institution.
Our undergraduate and graduate programs empower students in our Myron E. Ullman, Jr. School of Design with a core of knowledge that provides a solid educational base. Our students are prepared for careers in Communication Design, Fashion Design, or Industrial Design by a passionate faculty, rigorous academic endeavors, and a world-class professional practice (co-op) program.
Communication Design: In this program, students receive a foundation in visual communication problem solving. The core of the curriculum is a series of sequential design studios that help students develop critical and visual thinking skills along with essential design processes. Students develop in areas including graphic design, interaction design and motion design, and reinforce their skills in a unique 5-year curriculum alternating semesters of education with professional practice experiences. Faculty develop research or creative work in a broad range of areas.
Essential Functions
- This position requires a full-time teaching load of 15 credit hours per academic year, which entails developing and delivering course content, projects, and supporting materials for skill-based demonstrations. This includes integrated theoretical and practical design assignments with emphasis in interaction, interface, and/or experience design and attention to form-making with digital media, information, and communication technologies.
- Teaching will primarily occur at the undergraduate level but may include opportunities to teach in the Master of Design program.
- Candidates are expected to conduct and publish research in the field of communication design and/or User Experience/User Interface (UX/UI) design and, in time, will also be expected to provide leadership in faculty and/or student research initiatives and curricular development within the program.
- Successful candidates are expected to maintain current knowledge and skills related to the field of communication design and UX/UI design, which include but are not limited to, information visualization and navigation, computational and generative visual systems, interactive prototyping and product service design, design with AI/ML, and design for accessibility, theory, methods, and collaboration.
- As the Sallie Baldwin Endowed Professor, candidates will be expected to apply alternative learning and teaching methods, and mentor/work with students with disabilities.
- A full-time faculty member serves on various School, College, and/or University committees.
Minimum Requirements
Include all the following prior to effective date of the appointment:
- Master’s degree in communication design, interaction design, or related field.
- One year industry experience in the field of interaction design or related field.
