Position Summary/Purpose of Position: Faculty Position in Experimental High Intensity Laser Physics

The University of Maryland Department of Physics invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor in Experimental High Intensity Laser Physics. The successful candidate would be expected to complement or enhance our internationally competitive interdisciplinary efforts in high intensity laser-matter interactions, including plasma and high energy density physics, advanced laser-driven particle accelerators and light sources, atomic physics, nonlinear optics, and structured light. Associated campus units with complementary research programs are the Institute for Research in Electronics and Applied Physics (IREAP) and the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Some research overlap exists with the Joint Quantum Institute (JQI). The National Institutes of Health, the Naval Research Lab, the Army Research Lab, and the Johns Hopkins Univ. Applied Physics Lab are within short driving distance.
The University of Maryland’s physics department is nationally ranked. State-of-the-art facilities are available, including the Nanocenter fabrication lab and advanced imaging and microscopy lab. The preferred starting date for the position is August of 2024.
A more senior level position could be considered for exceptional candidates.

Minimum Qualifications: Education:
A Ph.D. in physics or related discipline.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Good teaching skills, particularly in settings with diverse groups, is a high priority of the Department, and a potential for teaching excellence is necessary. 
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, have good communication skills, and have the potential for leadership within the research community.
