The Faculty of Social Sciences comprises nine departments, schools and institutes, which offer undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral programs in both English and French. Description of the position:

The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of Environmental Policy.

The successful candidate will be jointly appointed to the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) and the interdisciplinary Institute of the Environment (IE) and will teach and supervise graduate students in both units.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in a related field and demonstrate a productive and ambitious research program relating to environmental policy, such as climate change policy, biodiversity policy, clean innovation policy, or circular economy policy. Both GSPIA and IE emphasize excellence in policy-relevant research in an interdisciplinary setting.

We seek candidates whose research seeks to inform practical environmental policies relevant to a clean economy in Canada. Experience working on applied environmental policy, inside or outside government, is an asset.

The successful candidate will be expected to play an active role in the governance, research and policy outreach activities of GSPIA and IE, which also houses Smart Prosperity, Canada’s leading green economy research institute.

Duties:

  • Research activities, including refereed publications
  • Teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the GSPIA and the IE
  • Supervision of graduate students
  • Commitment to participating in the educational and administrative activities of the units and the Faculty
  • Performing any other activity provided for in the Collective Agreement

Qualifications:

  • PhD in a field related to environmental policy. Candidates who are close to completing a Ph.D. will also be considered.
  • Productive and ambitious research program that seeks to inform practical environmental policies relevant to Canada
  • Demonstrated capacity to teach undergraduate and graduate courses on environmental policy upon hiring
  • Demonstrated interest in policy engagement

Terms: Tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. Note that tenure is conditional on active knowledge of Canada’s two official languages (English and French).

Salary: Salary scale for an Assistant Professor starts at $94,588 (as of May 1, 2023).

Starting Date: July 1, 2025
