| Description of Work |
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte recognizes the differentiation of mission, goals, and objectives inherent in the diversity of disciplines represented by its colleges and departments. Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals. To view the complete Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure-Track Faculty document visit our website: http://provost.uncc.edu/academic-budget-personnel/handbook/search-committee |
| Essential Duties and Responsibilities | Responsibilities include teaching courses within the undergraduate music theory sequence, particularly upper-division coursework; overseeing the music theory curriculum; and working with faculty to decenter the curriculum by designing and teaching courses focusing on music traditions beyond the European-American classical canon such as popular music, jazz, and/or musics of underrepresented cultures/ethnicities. Additional teaching duties may be assigned based on the needs of the department. Responsibilities also include developing and maintaining a clearly defined scholarly/creative agenda (e.g., music theory, composition, ethnomusicology, community-engaged practices) that will result in a strong record of peer-reviewed work; promoting an environment of collegiality; demonstrating effective communication skills; and providing service to the campus and professional community. |
| Minimum Experience/Education |
UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline. |
| Preferred Education, Skills and Experience | Candidates must hold a doctorate in music theory or related field (ABD considered; terminal degree by time of appointment required), possess a record of, or potential for, effective teaching at the collegiate level, and demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion and sharing the work of retaining diverse first-generation college students within the context of a public urban research university. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate a scholarly interest in music traditions beyond the European-American classical canon, as well as to candidates whose research, teaching, and/or public engagement could help further departmental goals of increasing social equity in music studies. |
