Introduction (Description of School/College/Dept/Program) UWM is a doctoral/research intensive university and Wisconsin’s premier public urban institution, offering a comprehensive liberal arts, sciences and professional education at the undergraduate and graduate level to nearly 25,000 students. The School of Information Studies (SOIS) offers several educational programs: a Bachelor of Science in Information Science and Technology (BSIST); a Masters of Science in Information Science and Technology (MSIST) degree in partnership with the Department of Computer Science; an ALA-accredited Masters of Library and Information Science (MLIS); several coordinated graduate degree programs, including Health Informatics; transcript-designated concentrations within the MLIS Archival Studies, Public Libraries, Information Organization, and Information Technology; post-masters Certificates of Advanced Study in Archives and Records Management and Digital Libraries; and a PhD in Information Studies. The School has a strong research faculty, more than 900 students, and state-of-the-art information technology.
SOIS faculty organizes three research groups: the Research Group for Information Retrieval, Knowledge Organization Research Group, and the Social Studies of Information Research Group.

Job Summary The School of Information Studies (SOIS), the iSchool at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (UWM), a Carnegie Research 1 institution, invites applications for an Assistant Professor.
Ideal candidates will be interested in research and pedagogy in several areas of library science including children’s, teen and emerging adult librarianship and/or school library media. Candidates will be expected to teach core courses in the MLIS program, as well as courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs. The selected applicant will be expected to maintain an active research agenda in their field of interest. Academic service is expected. Candidates should bring a background that includes social justice, intellectual freedom, and community outreach. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate an ability to articulate the value of the profession / MLIS to contemporary society.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in Library Science and Information Studies or a related discipline by time of appointment.
  • Evidence of potential for teaching in library sciences field (as noted in the job summary).
  • Excellent promise of funded research.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience or demonstrated ability in the design and delivery of courses in a variety of formats, including onsite and online.
  • Evidence of a collaborative focus in research.
