Summary
Baylor College of Medicine and the NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center are affiliated with five major teaching hospitals in the Texas Medical Center including Baylor St Luke’s Medical Center, The Ben Taub General Hospital and the Michael E DeBakey VA Medical Center. Ample laboratory space is available in the Cancer Center. The 450 members of the DLDCCC generate more than $170M annually in cancer related research funding including more than $51M from the NCI. Two long-term SPORE grants in breast cancer and lymphoma, a third SPORE with MD Anderson in Brain tumors, and a Leukemia Lymphoma SCOR Grant are among 85 multi-investigator awards, half from NCI. Cancer researchers in Texas may apply for research funding to the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (a state agency charged with supporting innovation in cancer research in Texas with funding of 3 billion dollars over the next 10 years). Generous recruitment awards are also available on a competitive basis from CPRIT. DLDCCC is composed of 7 outstanding research programs including Nuclear Receptor, Transcription and Chromatin Biology, Pediatric Oncology, Cancer Prevention and Population Science, Cell Signaling and Metabolism, Mechanisms of Cancer Evolvability, Breast Cancer, and Cancer Cell and Gene Therapy. Cancer specific Disease Working Groups in 10 different cancer sites bring basic scientists and clinical researchers together for collaborative translational research. Several new initiatives are in development including expanded experimental therapeutics with early phase clinical trials, and precision cancer medicine and proteogenomics. Ten Shared Resources are available to Cancer Center members, and the Human Genome Sequencing Center, the Center for Drug Discovery, and the Therapeutic Innovation Center focusing on drug development are additional unique resources. The Center is the recipient of a $100M naming gift from the Duncan family. A new ambulatory care building primarily for cancer and new inpatient hospital are under construction.
