Position Description
| Advertised Job Summary | The faculty of the Department of Geography at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for a 9-month, full time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Cartography and Geographic Information Science with an emphasis on Transportation to begin August 16, 2023. The research and teaching focus of this position is digital cartography and geographic information systems and the application of these technologies to the study of transportation (inequality, urban, planning). The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting and growing the GIS program and will participate in the university’s new interdisciplinary cyber intelligence undergraduate degree program and the geointelligence (GEOINT) certificate. In addition to supporting lower- and upper-level GIS courses, the candidate will develop new and redesign existing GIS courses for our graduate program. Applicants must have previous experience teaching cartography as an instructor of record. The successful candidate will teach 4 courses per academic year (2 per semester) and participate in department (e.g., academic advising), university, and disciplinary service. The Department currently consists of seventeen tenured/tenure-track faculty and two full-time instructors. Current research areas of the faculty include resource politics, environmental hazards, human rights, coastal geomorphology, energy geographies, big data, remote sensing, biogeography, migration, and climate change. The Department has about 20 full-time graduate students and offers PhD, MS, MA, BS, and BA degrees.
