Position Information

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The Department of Geography serves as a teaching and research unit within the College of Arts & Sciences.
Position Summary The Department of Geography at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor starting on July 1, 2023. This position is one in an exciting cluster hire initiative led by the College of Arts and Sciences to reimagine Native American and Indigenous Studies at UNC-CH. PhD in Geography, or a related humanities, social science, or environmental field, is required at the time of appointment.
We seek applicants whose thematic, methodological, or topical areas of research in Native American and/or Indigenous Geographies will complement the department’s thriving research and teaching (undergraduate and graduate) programs. Area of specialization open.
The College of Arts and Sciences cluster hire initiative comprises positions in American Studies, Geography, Religious Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies. The College is committed to supporting the individuals hired in this cluster cohort as well as the University’s curriculum in Native American and Indigenous Studies. Additionally, UNC-CH has robust resources supporting Indigenous peoples, including the American Indian Center, Carolina Indian Circle, and The First Nations Graduate Circle. UNC-CH is also home to the renowned Southern Historical Collection, the Center for the Study of the American South, the Research Labs of Archaeology, and the Institute for the Study of the Americas, and several global studies centers and institutes.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements PhD in Geography, or a related humanities, social science, or environmental field, with an emphasis in Native American/Indigenous Studies, is required.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience We are especially interested in candidates who actively collaborate with Native peoples and Indigenous communities. As an academic community, we value intellectual diversity and interdisciplinarity. We also recognize the labor (emotional and otherwise) that goes into teaching and mentoring within/among underrepresented communities and are invested in fostering environments where diverse creative and intellectual endeavors are affirmed and can flourish.
