UCHA MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF EMERGENCY SERVICES

Position Summary:  The role of the Medical Director is to serve as the clinical operations lead for healthcare providers and staff to ensure optimal care delivery of patients who present to the emergency department (ED) for acute, episodic or unscheduled care. They shall support the philosophy, mission, vision, and values of UCHealth and the Department of Emergency Medicine through leadership, planning, financial stewardship, maintenance of quality standards, patient care and performance improvement and serve as the point person for quality and safety, access, service delivery, performance.  The Medical Director serves jointly with the ED Manager(s) as a practice leadership dyadic team to provide clinical and administrative leadership for emergency department operations in the ED and related areas including clinical decision units (CDU).   The Medical Director is expected to collaborate with hospital administrative and nursing leadership to assure the highest quality of patient care and provider experience as well as ensure efficient operations while delivering high quality and safe patient care.

The Medical Director will be expected to demonstrate excellence in clinical activity through:

  • Demonstration of individual excellence in clinical performance.
  • Implementation and monitoring of existing and novel clinical guidelines and pathways.
  • Creative, active participation in the evaluation of the effectiveness of care (quality, outcomes, patient safety, utilization, access, cost).
  • Demonstration of effective leadership at the site of clinical practice.
  • Leadership of structured activities that promote quality of care and patient safety and that advance the science and practice of health care quality improvement.

Appointment/Evaluation: The Medical Director will be appointed by the Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine with concurance of the UCHA Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO).  Evaluation as Medical Director will be on an annual basis by the Department Chair or designee with input from relevant UCHA Associate Chief Medical Officers (ACMOs) and Vice Chair of Operations of the Department of Emergency Medicine. Annual performance evaluations will be shared with the UCHA CMO.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement operations, quality, and process improvement programs, which seek to meet annual performance target metrics as approved by Department Chair.
  • Co-direct the efficient management of the unit to optimize quality and utilization.
  • Recommend to hospital administration improvements in patient care and ways to enhance patient safety.
  • Develop patient safety improvement projects, ensures adherence to agreed upon quality and safety standards.
  • Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with appropriate clinical standards, which may include development and implementation of critical pathways, algorithms or protocols.
  • Promote patient service excellence. Develop and implement strategies to optimize patient experience.
  • Respond promptly to patient complaintss and care concerns from internal and external providers and stakeholders.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance, including compliance with medical staff bylaws, Joint Commission, CLIA and other regulatory standards. Participate in relevant surveys.
  • Participate in evaluating, planning, and implementing the optimal use of physical ED spaces and capabilities and relevant processes.
  • Represent the emergency department and Department of Emergency Medicine in cross-functional, interdisciplinary, and interprofessional forums within the hospital, health system, and region as directed by the Chair.
  • Participate in annual performance evaluations of faculty and staff with unit Director as appropriate.  These annual performance evaluations will be approved by the department Chair or designee.
  • The Medical Director and Director/ Manager will collaborate to provide oversight and direction to clinical and administrative staff on the unit/service.
  • Provide oversight, direction, clinical onboarding, and mentoring to faculty.
  • Participate in HR activities including staff and provider interviews for hiring/advancement
  • Collaborate with hospital and university leadership in disciplinary and compliance matters.
  • Ensure a Culture of Respect for co-workers and colleagues. Model team work and actively work to develop high performance teams of staff and providers. Optimize provider and staff satisfaction.
  • Facilitate inter-professional educational opportunities.
  • Communicate unit, hospital, system and university priorities and initiatives to providers and staff.

  • Actively participate in the development of strategies to optimize financial productivity and operational efficiency while maintaining quality service, faculty and staff satisfaction, superior clinical outcomes, and patient and provider satisfaction.
  • Partner with the Unit Director/Manager and the Department administrator in preparing and reviewing annual volume projections, operating budgets and capital budget requests. Jointly accountable with the Unit Manager for meeting the established budget targets.
  • Evaluate and respond to the monthly performance reports from hospital and University leadership and develop action plans for improvement and sustainability.
  • Recommend to hospital administration new technologies, treatments and other advances in patient care.
  • Work collaboratively with hospital and university leadership to align growth strategies and priorities.
  • Participate in key departmental, hospital, service line, School of Medicine, and other committees and projects as requested by hospital CEO, COO, CMO and/or Department Chair or designee.
  • Participate in teaching and mentoring administrative trainees.

  • Salary and Benefits:

    The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at:

    Assistant professor – $215,894 – $245,285

    Associate professor – $255,285 – $283,934

    Professor – $293,934 – $326,920

    The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

    The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
