The Department of Physics invites applications for a full-time (1.00FTE), 9-month, tenure-track (annual) Assistant Professor position.
The primary responsibilities of this position are to establish and sustain an independent research program through external funding; publish original research in peer-reviewed journals; teach and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and possibly postdocs; and provide institutional and professional service.
OSU is a public R1 research university and the largest university in the state of Oregon, with an enrollment of over 33,000 students and a sponsored-project research budget of over 380 million dollars per year. The Department of Physics has research groups in the areas of astrophysics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, high energy physics, optical physics, physics education, and quantum cosmology. OSU conducts discipline-based education research across the College of Science, the College of Engineering, the College of Education, and the STEM Research Center. Additionally, OSU fosters a vibrant community involved in the scholarship of teaching and learning. The successful candidate will engage in research that expands or complements the current areas of physics education research at OSU. These areas include sense making and representational fluency in upper-division physics. OSU is located in the city of Corvallis, which is ranked as one of the best small college towns in the US. The city offers year-round cultural and outdoor activities, as well as easy access to the Cascade mountains, the Pacific coast, the Portland metro area, and many other communities and college towns throughout the Willamette Valley.

45% Teaching and Advising:
  • Teaching of regular credit courses as assigned, in keeping with the highest professional standards and following best practices for diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion. This includes preparing for class meetings, facilitating class meetings, supervising teaching assistants and/or learning assistants, timely grading of assignments and exams, making class information available on a learning management system or on the web, holding regular office hours, and participating in course assessment. The total number of regular courses per year in this position is 3.
  • Curriculum development (single course improvement without dissemination).
  • Supervision of seminars (Research, Communications, Teaching, etc.) and/or training faculty, graduate TAs, and undergraduate LAs in best teaching practices.
  • Directing undergraduate senior theses; service on master and doctoral committees.
  • General advising of students.


45% Scholarship and Creative Activity:

  • Pursue scholarly activities through research in the field of physics education. Results should be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented in professional meetings, symposia, and conferences.
  • Mentor graduate students in scholarly activities.
  • Obtain grant and contract support for the research to support (if applicable) research assistants, travel, summer salary, publication expenses, research equipment, computer equipment, and other costs of operating a research program.
  • Other activities in this category are publication of non-refereed papers, web publications, social media activity, public outreach, publication of books and book chapters, patent awards, and inventions.
  • Fulfill legal compliance requirements appropriate to the research topic, e.g., human subjects safety, chemical safety, radiation safety, information security.

10% Service:

  • Serve the department as assigned, including departmental committees and faculty mentorship.
  • Participate in training and professional development to maintain a current knowledge of best practices in teaching, mentoring, and interacting with students.
  • Be a supportive member of the physics community.
  • Serve in college and university level committees, centers, and programs.
  • Serve the profession: This includes involvement with professional associations/societies, including holding offices; participation in research advisory or review panels; review of manuscripts for journals; organization of conferences, including chairing conference sessions; instruction of courses and delivery of workshops in developing countries; outreach; writing of external promotion letters; and similar activities.
  • In all service roles, advance the goals of improving diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion.

Ph.D. in Physics or an allied discipline or a Ph.D. in Education with a strong background in Physics. PhD must be awarded before the anticipated start date.
Demonstrable ability to plan and conduct methodologically sound physics education research using qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods.
Demonstrable ability to disseminate the results of scholarly and creative activity to professional communities and the public.
Demonstrable ability to articulate a vision for a long-term research program that advances knowledge and understanding in physics education research and benefits society.
Demonstrable ability or significant potential to write competitive grant proposals, particularly for collaborative projects.
Demonstrable ability or significant potential to supervise successful PhD, MS and undergraduate theses.
Demonstrated ability or significant potential to recruit and manage graduate and undergraduate student researchers equitably and inclusively, and foster an equitable and inclusive group environment.
Demonstrated ability or significant potential to use best practices for teaching in university contexts, including: using active engagement pedagogies; featuring student ideas in classroom discussions; and supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion,
Demonstrable ability or significant potential to contribute to faculty teaching teams and curriculum discussion/development groups.
Sufficient knowledge of physics to teach a variety of upper-division undergraduate physics classes.
Demonstrated ability or significant potential to contribute to the progress and well-being of departmental, college, university, professional, and public communities.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion including a commitment to educational equity and to advancing the participation of diverse groups in science.
