Position Summary

The Department of Civil, Construction & Environmental
Engineering (CCEE) at the University of New Mexico (UNM) invites applications
for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Computational Mechanics to
join our growing department starting Fall 2023.
The CCEE Department has a vision for unprecedented growth in
research and education over the next 10 years that includes an aggressive
search and hire of the future leaders in civil, construction, and environmental
engineering. The successful candidate will contribute to the research and teaching
mission of the Department, which currently has 18 faculty members, several
research professors, 230 undergraduate students, and 76 graduate students. The
Department generates over $7.0 million in annual research expenditures. The Department
is housed in the Centennial Engineering Center contains state-of-the-art civil
engineering laboratories. The Department research centers include Dana Wood
Materials and Structures Lab, the Center for Water and the Environment, the UNM
Resilience Institute, and a regional University Transportation Center (UTC). The
University of New Mexico also enjoys close collaborations with area research
laboratories such as Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National
Laboratory, and the Air Force Research Lab.
Candidates with track record and background in the field of Computational
Mechanics are invited to apply. Areas of interest include but not limited to
computational mechanics in the areas of geomechanics, fluid dynamics,
biomechanics, structural mechanics, probabilistic mechanics, poromechanics,
composite mechanics, and/or finite element modeling.
To qualify, candidates must have a PhD in civil engineering,
or a field closely related to the above focus area by the appointment date.
Applicants will be evaluated on these preferred qualifications: (1) their
ability to develop an externally funded research program in one of the focus
areas described above and that complements existing Department strengths and
leads to collaboration inside and outside the Department; (2) their commitment
to undergraduate and graduate education and ability to teach core Structural
Engineering courses including Structural Analysis and Finite Element Methods;
(3) a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, student success,
and working broadly with diverse communities; and (4) registration as a
Professional Engineer (PE) or completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination
(FE) with plans to pursue PE registration.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Doctorate in Civil Engineering or closely related fields by July 1st , 2022

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The ability to develop an externally funded research program in the specific focus area described above
  • A commitment to undergraduate and graduate education
  • The ability to teach core in structural and computational mechanics including specifically
    -Structural Analysis
    -Finite element modeling
    -Advanced computational mechanics
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE), or completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) with plans to pursue PE registration
