Organizational Unit Overview ECU enrolls around 28,000 students, with over 5,500 pursuing graduate or professional degrees and is a Doctoral/Research-Intensive University with a large health sciences component, including the the School of Dental Medicine (https://dental.ecu.edu/ ) and the Brody School of Medicine (https://medicine.ecu.edu/) , home of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (https://pathology.ecu.edu/ ) which includes three board certified forensic pathologists working in the Eastern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office (part of the North Carolina Medical Examiner system). The Department of Anthropology (https://anthropology.ecu.edu/ ) offers both a BA and MA in Anthropology, a minor in Medical Anthropology, and several certificates at the undergraduate level including Global Cross-Cultural Competency, Forensic Anthropology, and Cultural Resources Management. The department also contributes coursework to the Forensic Science minor offered by the Department of Criminal Justice (https://criminal-justice.ecu.edu ). The department offers a holistic approach to culture, adaptation, and health to promote a better understanding of human diversity, both past and present. The department’s faculty cover a wide spectrum of specialization, broadly representative of Anthropology’s four-field approach to the study of the human condition. These include behavioral ecology, bioarchaeology, medical anthropology, social-ecological systems, historic and prehistoric archaeology, ethnoarchaeology, primate behavior, and human evolution. Shared across all faculty is an applied research focus and engagement in locally relevant research: from Black heritage studies to environmental justice to economic and health inequalities.
Job Duties The Department of Anthropology seeks a Forensic Anthropologist for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor starting August 2023. The Department seeks candidates who have an active research program in forensic anthropology and an interest in the biological consequences of inequality and discrimination and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The position requires teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, including but not limited to introduction to biological anthropology, forensic anthropology, and human skeletal analysis. The candidate will also be responsible for developing undergraduate and graduate courses that align with forensic anthropology or closely-related topics. Faculty are expected to perform university and professional service and have an active research program that involves mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students.

Minimum Education/Experience A PhD in Anthropology or a closely related field is required. Qualifying degree must be conferred and received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation None
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education Preference will be given to candidates whose research and teaching crosses subfield boundaries with medical and cultural anthropology. Applicants are expected to demonstrate potential for research which engages students and emerging scholars, is supported by external funding, and disseminated via high quality publications.
