Assistant Professor, Open Tenure-Track Faculty Position
Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Tenure faculty (regardless of rank) – persons with the titles of professor, associate professor, assistant professor and instructor who serve on appointments totaling 50% or more service to the university and who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. Duties and responsibilities are assigned in accordance with the workload guidelines laid out in the pattern of administration of each faculty member’s tenure initiation unit (TIU) and, as appropriate, regional campus; obligations will include research, service and/or teaching or clinical practice.  These faculty will have earned doctorate or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study or possession of equivalent experience.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (https://mse.osu.edu ) at The Ohio State University (OSU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Mesoscale Microstructural Science and Computational Materials Science. Although a prospective candidate has been identified for this opportunity, we welcome candidates to apply if they would like to be considered as well.

Position Overview :

The Departments of Materials Science and Engineering as well as the broader materials research community at OSU seek to expand and enhance core research areas in advanced functional, energy, and structural materials as well as in corrosion and oxidation in extreme environment through integration of experimentation with computation by adding synergistic expertise in the areas of mesoscale modeling of electrochemical reactions at heterogeneous materials interfaces and chemical synthesis of functional materials. The successful candidate is expected to develop and sustain active sponsored research programs, teach core undergraduate and/or graduate courses, and involve actively in both internal and external professional services.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned doctoral or equivalent degree in Materials Science and Engineering or similar fields.

A successful candidate will: 

  • Display leadership and ability for collaboration in an academic environment
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently as a proactive self-starter with strong project leadership skills
  • Display potential ability to attract significant state/federal funding and/or industrial partnerships to create and sustain a vibrant research program
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrate desire and ability to work constructively, decisively, and collegially with external and internal colleagues and interdisciplinary teams

  • A commitment to interdisciplinary education and collaborative research
  • Experience and training in mentoring and teaching skills
  • Familiarity in working with university administrators and leaders
  • A track-record of, and strong commitment to, cultivating an equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment, including among one’s faculty and staff cohort and in student/postdoc recruitment and training.
