Job Summary:

The Department of German, Nordic, and Slavic+ at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for a tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor. We are seeking scholars of German literature/culture with specialization in one or more of the following areas: 1) media studies (incl. film/TV/new media, visual studies, photography); 2) environmental humanities/ecocriticism; 3) race/ethnicity (incl. minoritized groups in German-speaking countries or German-speaking interaction with minoritized groups outside Central Europe); 4) queer studies/sexuality studies and related areas; and 5) disability studies. The time period of specialization is open, with a preference for 1750 to the present and/or areas that complement current program strengths.

Responsibilities:

This is a full-time (9-month) tenure-track faculty position to begin August 21, 2023. The standard faculty teaching assignment is four courses each academic year (two courses each semester). Candidates will be expected to be engaged in significant scholarly research and publication at the national and international levels. Service duties in the department as well as at the university and professional levels as appropriate for faculty rank will be required.

Applicants must hold or anticipate receiving a doctorate in German studies or a closely related field by the start of the appointment.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must be capable of teaching at all levels of the curriculum and demonstrate a commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Native or near native fluency in German and English are required; the candidate must be capable of teaching advanced courses in either language. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in teaching; at least one year of post-secondary teaching experience is required; teaching experience in North America is preferred.

The Department of German, Nordic, and Slavic+ (GNS+) is a vibrant intellectual community of colleagues whose teaching and research span multiple academic disciplines and more than a dozen languages. The department is home to one of the leading programs of German studies in North America, with roots extending back to the 1850s. The German+ unit offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses on German language, literature, culture, and linguistics. Faculty research and teaching areas in German+ include synchronic and historical linguistics, second language acquisition, foreign language pedagogy, gender and women’s studies, religious studies, Jewish studies, philosophy, medical humanities, poetry, migration literatures, world literary studies, East German studies, and German-American studies. German+ colleagues also teach and conduct research in Dutch, Pennsylvania Dutch, Turkish, and Yiddish studies. The quarterly journal Monatshefte has been published by the German program since 1927, offering articles on a range of topics in German literature and culture. UW-Madison is also home to the Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies and one of seven DAAD Centers for German and European Studies in North America. The University’s libraries are noted for the depth and breadth of their German-language holdings.
