The Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, in collaboration with the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies, invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor of Instruction in Yiddish language and culture, to begin September 1st, 2023. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching nine credit hours (the equivalent of three courses) each of two long semesters, including accelerated first-year and second-year Yiddish, according to departmental needs. The successful candidate will also be expected to strengthen the Yiddish program, offer extra-curricular activities (such as conversation groups), and to contribute to service in the Department of Germanic Studies and/or the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies. Located at the flagship campus of the University of Texas System, our department offers a congenial and exciting context for teaching and research in Germanic languages, literatures, and cultures.
Qualifications
Candidates must have at minimum a Master’s degree (Ph.D. is preferred) in the Yiddish language or in a closely related field (any area of Jewish studies, linguistics, or a related field) and native or near-native fluency in Yiddish. A record of teaching excellence in a university context is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate will also be able to contribute to the undergraduate program in Jewish Studies. We are especially interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their teaching, research, and service.
Application Instructions
Interested candidates are invited to upload via Interfolio: 1) a cover letter detailing their qualifications, 2) a teaching portfolio, 3) a detailed curriculum vitae, and 4) at least three letters of recommendation. The deadline for applications is Dec. 1, 2022. Please direct questions about the search to Prof. Hans C. Boas (hcb@mail.utexas.edu ) with the words “Yiddish search” in the subject line.
