About the Program and Job Description
The School of Resource and Environmental Management (REM) at Simon Fraser University (SFU) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Indigenous Environmental Governance and Management. Starting date for the position is negotiable, but we hope the successful candidate will assume the appointment by November 15, 2026.
This opportunity is limited to applicants who self-identify as Indigenous Persons who are First Nations, Métis and Inuit in Canada – pursuant to section 42(3) of the Code. The University received approval from the British Columbia Human Rights Commissioner to limit recruitment and hiring for various faculty positions to those who self-identify as Indigenous Persons (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) – Under Section 1 of the B.C. Human Rights Code, Indigenous Peoples meaning is as defined in the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act -which further states that “Indigenous Peoples” has the same meaning as aboriginal peoples in section 35 of the Canadian constitution. Candidates are required to complete a self-identification survey as part of their application package by the deadline indicated in this job posting. By completing the survey, you will be supporting academic units in tracking potential job applicants who identify as Indigenous in keeping with the University’s intention of hiring at least 15 Indigenous faculty by 2030, to meet our obligations under SFU’s Employment Equity Policy (GP19), identify and remove systemic barriers to recruitment and hiring and enhance equity, diversity and inclusion in hiring faculty. The information will be used in conjunction with your work experience, work ability and qualifications to determine your appropriateness for this position. We are interested in applications from Indigenous Persons scholars who will advance environmental governance and management issues, decolonization, and reconciliation as they relate to Indigenous communities in Canada and beyond through interdisciplinary research, teaching, mentoring, and community engagement. We seek a collaborative colleague who will address topics related to marine or terrestrial caretaking practices, environmental governance and management, sovereignty and self-determination, Indigenous law, land use planning, cultural land management, economic development and community well-being, social-ecological systems, food security, climate change, or aquatic management.
The candidate should hold a PhD. Relevant background disciplines include Indigenous studies, anthropology, sociology, community and regional planning, political science, environmental or social history, geography, human ecology, economics, business, or law. Preference will be for candidates with experience conducting community-engaged research with Indigenous communities.
PhD candidates with solid indication of imminent completion may be hired at the rank of Instructor and will be promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor upon completion of the PhD. Under exceptional circumstances we may consider outstanding candidates with a mix of education and experience that could be considered equivalent to the PhD.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized program of research. Other expectations include graduate and undergraduate teaching, graduate research supervision, knowledge mobilization and engagement with Indigenous communities. The candidate would be expected to teach core courses in Indigenous Governance including REM 207 (Indigenous Peoples and Resource Management), REM/PLAN 404 (Indigenous Planning and Stewardship) and REM/PLAN 407/607 (Indigenous Governance and Resource Relationships), as well as one of REM 100 (Global Change) or REM 200 (Resource Management in Canada) and/or other courses related to the candidate’s field of specialization.

Faculty salaries at SFU are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the SFU Faculty Association. A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is as follows (dependent on experience and inclusive of market differential):
Instructor: $98,340
Assistant Professor: $104,700 to $148,322
Associate Professor: $130,142 to $170,584
