About the Role

The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies (SHAPS) is a part of the Faculty of Arts and comprises of History, Philosophy, History and Philosophy of Science, Classics and Archaeology, The Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation and The Program in Jewish Culture & Society. SHAPS offers a wide range of subjects in these disciplines and has a large Honours and postgraduate student cohort. This position resides within the Classics and Archaeology Discipline and report to the Discipline Chair.

The School seeks to appoint an Assistant Lecturer in Ancient Languages (Teaching Specialist) with a passion for teaching Ancient Greek and Latin The incumbent will thrive in teaching level 1-3 classes and will work closely with the discipline chair and classics colleagues. The role will be responsible for coordination of subjects in accordance with the Faculty’s Local Operating rules and will also be responsible for all administrative tasks associated with the delivery and assessment of specified subjects and the development of subject teaching materials.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating and teaching of beginners-level Latin and Ancient Greek subjects, including summer intensive Latin, as advised by the head of discipline; Teach into other subjects as required
  • Development of specified subjects and teaching materials (including tutorial guidelines for tutors); and subject guides and reading packs (where applicable) for students
  • Conduct lectures/seminars/tutorials in the required mode (e.g., online, classroom, blended) to a high standard

About You
You will be a qualified and motivated individual with strong record of teaching experience in a tertiary environment in a range of teaching delivery modes (online, classroom and blended). Your ability to interact positively and professionally with academic and professional staff colleagues at all levels and to work cooperatively with students will be vital in this role.

You will also have:

  • A PhD in Classics or cognate field
  • Demonstrated successful tertiary study in the relevant discipline and relevant experience
  • Experience in managing and supporting staff and fostering an effective teaching team
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum and subject material development
