Job Description Summary:
To provide complex lab and/or technical classroom support services to faculty and students.
Job Description:
Description of Duties and Tasks
- Monitors the sculpture shop during or outside of regularly scheduled class hours.
- Aids students in the completion of their assigned work during or outside of regularly scheduled class hours
- Organizes, plans, and prioritizes laboratory activities for designated area.
- Performs clerical duties including operating a computer, maintaining records and files, and compiling data and reports as required.
- Maintains an inventory of supplies and materials.
- Collects data, records, and other information and submits reports as required.
- Coordinates, operates, and monitors lab facilities and activities.Directs and organizes preparation of lab materials, supplies, workstations, equipment, computers, and other media to ensure efficient lab operations.
- Organizes, plans, and prioritizes the overall coordination of laboratory activities for designated area; adapts and applies laboratory methods, practices, and techniques common to designated area. Directs or performs the preparation of student experience and demonstrations, performing routine and analytical work; pilots new labs to be considered. Implements new or modified laboratory policies and procedures.
- Ensures safe laboratory conditions including safe and secure handling and storage of supplies and equipment.Recommends, implements, and maintains safety standards and departmental policies and procedures to comply with federal, state, and local hazardous materials, health and safety hazardous waste regulations, and other applicable regulations.
- Initiates purchase requisitions, controls expenditures, prepares cost estimates for budget recommendation and submits justifications and requests for capital outlay items.Prepares specifications and analyzes bids for purchases.
- Operates, installs, maintains, and trouble-shoots equipment.Sets up, configures, and calibrates new equipment.Writes instructions and standard operating procedures for equipment operation.Performs routine maintenance and repair.
- May assist students in use of lab equipment and facilities.
- May be assigned special projects or assignments based on the unique needs of the assigned lab.
- May schedule, train, and monitor the work of lab assistants and other staff.
Additional Job Specific Duties
- Depending on area of assignment, may require Hazard Communications Training and additional safety training such as Lock out Tag out
- Schedule and pick up shop specific tools, consumables or materials using the art department’s vehicle.
Knowledge
- Knowledge of specialized discipline depending on the area of assignment.
- Wood Shop, Sculpture, tests and experiments policies and procedures.
- Hazardous material/waste handling and disposal.
- Wood Shop, Sculpture, best practices and safety procedures.
Skills
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal, maintains a professional attitude with all students, faculty, staff and visitors to the sculpture shop.
- Effectively using interpersonal and communications skills, including the use of tact and diplomacy.
- Maintaining an established work schedule.
- Effectively using organizational and planning skills, including the use of attention to detail and follow-through.

- Handling lab materials precisely and accurately.
- Is able to apply and understand the safe use and handling of wood working tools, metal working tools, power tools and hand tools towards basic construction or sculpture related tasks.
- Ability to cast and create molds in a variety of mediums such as plaster, silicone and sand (preferred)
- Is able to repair or replace essential components on power tools and equipment, such as blades, belts or bits.
- Is able to determine if any equipment needs of repair or replacement.
- Is able to repair or replace equipment components using best practices and following repair procedures or is able to determine if equipment is beyond user repair capabilities. (preferred)
- Ability to weld steel using MIG welder (preferred)
- Ability to safely drive and operate a fleet van
Technology Skills
- Well versed in Google Suite and/or google suite equivalent software such as spreadsheet, word processing, database, and presentation software.
- Use of CNC router software and hardware (preferred)
- Use of 3D printer software and hardware (preferred)
Required Work Experience
- Two years related work experience.
Required Education
- Associate degree.
Preferred Education
- Bachelors or Masters in Studio Art or related field.
Physical Requirements
- Helps to maintain a safe, clean shop environment.
- Ability to sweep, mop and clean shop surfaces.
- Ability to load and unload a vehicle.
- Work is performed in a variety of settings.
- Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling, and at times subject to stooping, crawling, and climbing.
- May need to lift heavy objects of up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
Safety
- Work safely and follow safety rules. Report unsafe working conditions and behavior. Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.
- Reports unsafe conditions to shop lead, aids in rectification or application of correction as prescribed by safety coordinators
- Helps to maintain a safe, clean shop environment.
- Understands and applies the knowledge found on MSDS sheets towards safe material handling.
